Oil prices rise on Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil jumped 1.7 percent Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made clear in a speech that the central bank will do more to revive the U.S. economy.

U.S benchmark crude rose $1.59 to $96.21 per barrel in morning trading Friday. Brent Crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refiners, rose $1.49 to $114.14.

In a speech at an annual Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Bernanke said the economic recovery is "far from satisfactory" but he did not give any timetable for action that might reduce borrowing costs and help stimulate growth.

If the Fed reduces the cost of borrowing, it could boost demand for the energy needed to fuel growth and make oil and other commodities more attractive investments.

"With interest rates near zero, people look for somewhere to put their money. One of those places is the oil market," said energy analyst and consultant Jim Ritterbusch.

Oil prices have wavered between $94 and $97 per barrel over the past two weeks, and Ritterbusch expects them to stay roughly within that range well into September. World oil demand is rising only slightly, and supplies are adequate. But continued worries over tensions between Iran and the West will keep prices from dropping. Expectations of financial stimulus programs from U.S. and European central banks will also keep the market propped up.

Hurricane Isaac did not have a major effect on crude prices this week, even though almost all of the oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was halted ahead of the storm. Production is expected to return to normal over the next several days.

U.S. retail gasoline prices surged over the past week after the storm forced several Gulf Coast refineries to shut down or operate at lower rates. But the dramatic price spike appears to be over and pump prices are expected to start falling after Labor Day, the last big driving weekend of the summer.

The average retail gasoline price rose less than a penny to $3.83 per gallon Friday according to the Oil Price Information Service, AAA, and Wright Express.

Tom Kloza said he expects average retail prices to creep slightly higher by Saturday. "But we're in the ninth inning of this," he said.

In other Nymex energy futures trading, heating oil advanced 2 cents to $3.16 a gallon, while wholesale gasoline added 4 cents to $2.94 a gallon. Natural gas rose 3 cents $2.78 per 1,000 cubic feet.

    MOON: Movie Trailer

    MOON: Movie Trailer

It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth?s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of ?Sarang,? the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond ?Gerty,? the base?s well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam?s health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a ?support crew? on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what?s going on and where he fits into company plans.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (77) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

(AP) ? Chancellor Angela Merkel wants the Greeks to keep the euro. Her vice chancellor says it wouldn't be so bad if they abandoned the common currency. Another ally says Greece should leave the euro club within months.

Merkel's image abroad may be that of Europe's determined taskmaster, but at home the picture has long been less clear: Her coalition government has become notorious for infighting over a range of issues. At first glance, the cacophony over Greece fits that picture ? but it shouldn't be mistaken for policy drift.

The chancellor still appears in control of the delicate balancing act she has performed for two years: to help struggling countries that accept tough budget cuts and reforms while convincing Germans she is defending their interests ? and wallets.

This week, a prominent lawmaker from a party allied with Merkel made headlines when he declared that Greece should leave the eurozone in 2013 ? flatly contradicting Merkel. His party backed down from such talk after she said in a television interview that politicians should "weigh their words."

Her personal popularity and reassuringly level-headed image, along with the opposition's reluctance so far to pick a serious fight, still give her room for maneuver against domestic pressure and foreign governments anxious for Germany to bail out weaker European economies.

Manfred Guellner, head of the Forsa polling agency, said that "people appreciate Merkel and in the end go along with her course" in hopes that the economic problems gripping much of Europe won't affect their lives.

Merkel's government insisted on tough conditions in return for German, and European, support for eurozone strugglers such as Greece and the two other countries that have received bailouts, Ireland and Portugal. With borrowing costs for Italy and Spain worryingly high, more such aid is likely to lie ahead.

Her diligence in demanding budget cuts and structural reforms as the price for German aid may be unpopular in Greece or Italy but it plays well among German voters.

"I think Merkel, whatever she does, will get a majority because the (opposition) Social Democrats and Greens also have to be statesmanlike," he said.

Merkel hasn't come close yet to losing any parliamentary vote on eurozone rescue measures. Although more than 20 coalition lawmakers voted in June against setting up a permanent European rescue fund, she had solid support in the 620-member parliament, with much of the opposition in favor.

The three-year-old coalition of Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union, its Bavarian sister, the Christian Social Union, and the pro-market Free Democrats has squabbled endlessly and inconclusively over issues as diverse as tax cuts, privacy laws and highway tolls.

The bickering extends to policy regarding the European debt crisis.

But on Europe, there's a key difference in that the center-right alliance agrees on the broad outline: It's united by distaste for pooling Germany's debt with that of southern strugglers and of making open-ended commitments to help them with economically sound Germany's check book. The opposition ? as well as many private economists ? argues for pooling debt.

Coalition lawmakers broadly agree that Greece shouldn't have more aid money on top of the two ?240 billion ($300 billion) bailout packages of which Germany has been a key financier and that Athens shouldn't be given more time to meet its reform commitments.

Bailing out Greece was never popular in Germany, and frustration with Athens is rising.

Raising questions over Greece's future in the euro offers hopes of political gain to some in Germany's two junior coalition parties, which both face domestic political challenges, though Guellner cautioned that "no party in Germany has ever been able to score points with the euro and the issue of Europe."

The Free Democrats won nearly 15 percent of the vote in Germany's 2009 election, but have slumped to around the 5 percent needed to win seats in Parliament ? a contrast with the solid ratings of Merkel's CDU, which consistently leads polls.

Their leader, Vice Chancellor Philipp Roesler, has struggled to turn around their fortunes.

Roesler irked Merkel last fall by talking about the possibility of an "orderly insolvency" for Greece, ignoring heavy hints from the chancellor to drop the subject.

This summer, he said a Greek exit from the euro had "lost its horror." Roesler didn't explicitly call for Greece to leave and Merkel let that pass without comment.

She clearly wasn't amused, however, by a new broadside from the CSU that comes as it prepares for important local elections in Bavaria next year.

Just a day after Merkel asserted, while standing next to Greece's prime minister, that she wants Greece to stay in the eurozone and that others in the coalition do as well, CSU general secretary Alexander Dobrindt was quoted as telling the mass-circulation Bild am Sonntag newspaper that "there is no way past a Greek exit from the Eurozone." He added: "I see Greece outside the Eurozone in 2013."

Merkel shot back that people should take care what they say in a "very decisive phase" of the financial crisis.

Midlife Fitness Cuts Chronic Disease Later

Click here to listen to this podcast

Being physically active has numerous benefits. Now a study has looked closely at the effects of fitness in the midlife years for preventing debilitating chronic diseases later.

The ongoing study gathered fitness stats for more than 18,000 adults, and followed their health status into old age. Assessing 40 years of that data, the analysis finds that those who had higher fitness levels in their 30s, 40s and 50s were substantially less likely to have a chronic condition between the ages of 70 and 85. The findings are in the Archives of Internal Medicine. [Benjamin Willis et al., Midlife Fitness and the Development of Chronic Conditions in Later Life]

Physical fitness seemed to stave off heart disease and heart failure, which might not be a big surprise. But it also reduced rates of diabetes, kidney disease and even Alzheimer's disease.

Current recommendations suggest adults make time for at least 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, such as fast walking, jogging, biking or swimming. Busy middle-aged people might find it especially hard to make time for such exercise. But a small investment looks like it could pay big health dividends for decades to come.

Swagbucks, a site where users earn rewards for performing tasks like watching videos and taking surveys, is expanding with the launch of a new shopping page.

Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Scott Dudelson tells me that there?s clearly money to be made in affiliate shopping programs, but Swagbucks has held off, and instead built ?a large reputable loyalty brand around other Internet activities.? It has also built a profitable, bootstrapped business, with $23 million in revenue last year (not including the shopping launch, he says the company is on-track for $30 million in 2012) and more than 5 million registered users.

Still, shopping is a good fit for the Swagbucks audience, which Dudelson says is dominated by moms ? ?the mommy bloggers, the coupon cutters.? (When I last spoke to Dudelson, he contrasted Swagbucks with a social rewards site like Lockerz, which aims at a younger audience.) The new service is an extension of the general Swagbucks concept ? you start at the Swagbucks shopping site, then follow a link to one of the partner stores, and you earn a certain number of ?swag bucks? (which can be redeemed for rewards) for each dollar you spend. For example, you earn 2 swag bucks for every dollar you spend at Walmart.com, and 4 swag bucks per dollar at Sears. Swagbucks, meanwhile, makes affiliate revenue from your purchases.

Shop and Earn Screenshot

Dudelson says this should disrupt affiliate shopping sites like Ebates and Fatwallet, where users get cash back on their purchases, because at Swagbucks, the experience isn?t limited to shopping, but is instead part of a larger rewards program. The company also plans to add more social features and the ability to gift ?swag bucks? to other users.

Swagbucks has been beta testing the new service with a limited group of users, and launched for everyone this week.

Prodege has developed over 150 on-line reward programs including the web?s most popular rewards destination - Swagbucks.com. Swagbucks.com enables users to earn virtual currency that can be redeemed for real life rewards for everyday actions they take online - from searching the web, to playing games to shopping on-line and many more. Prodege also runs a network of branded rewards portals for some of the most popular brands in the world including World Wrestling Entertainment, KISS, Green Bay Packers,...

GOP OKs platform barring abortions, gay marriage

(AP) ? Republicans emphatically approved a toughly worded party platform at their national convention Tuesday that would ban all abortions and gay marriages, reshape Medicare into a voucher-like program and cut taxes to energize the economy and create jobs.

The document opens by warning that while the American Dream has long been of equal opportunity for everyone, "Today that American Dream is at risk." It pledges that the GOP will "begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates."

Both parties routinely approve platforms at their conventions every four years, meant to encapsulate their principles and goals. Much of their details are customarily ignored when it comes to actually governing.

Even so, a poll by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found more people interested in the GOP platform than in the upcoming acceptance speeches by presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan. The survey found that 52 percent said they were interested in learning about the Republican platform, compared to 44 percent interested in Romney's speech and 46 percent interested in Ryan's.

"This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who led the party's platform committee. "It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings and neighborhoods without hope."

Democrats lambasted the platform and immediately sought to tie it to Romney, who has differed from some of its details. For instance, he has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is among several Democrats in Tampa trying to get their party's views heard, called the platform's stances on abortion and immigration "draconian" and "extreme" and blamed Romney. "What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another," Villaraigosa said. "He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can't have it both ways."

Here are key elements of the Republican platform:

JOB CREATION:

It states that the best jobs program is economic growth. "We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs."

___

SMALL BUSINESS:

The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.

___

TAXES:

"We reject the use of taxation to redistribute income, fund unnecessary or ineffective programs or foster the crony capitalism that corrupts both politicians and corporations."

It says a Republican administration would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It says the party would strive to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

The party backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.

___

MARRIAGE:

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

___

VOTER INTEGRITY:

"Voter fraud is a political poison," the platform says. It praises legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.

___

GUN CONTROL:

The party says it opposes legislation intended to restrict Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the assault weapons ban passed during the Clinton presidency.

___

ABORTION:

The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions. It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

___

ENERGY:

The party is committed to domestic energy independence and an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, backing the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. It criticizes the Obama administration for picking winners and losers in the energy sector and expresses support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.

It adds: "We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." It calls on Congress to prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."

____

MEDICARE and MEDICAID:

The platform pledges to move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.

Medicaid services for low income people would be transformed into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.

____

IMMIGRATION:

The platform makes clear that "we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it." It demands that the Justice Department halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. It says federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.

____

HEALTH CARE:

It states that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act pushed through by President Barack Obama and that Republican victories in November would guarantee that the act is never implemented. It proposes a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

____

EDUCATION:

Republicans support consumer choice, including home schooling, local innovations such as single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. It says Republicans renew their call for replacing family planning programs for teens "with abstinence education which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and respected standard of behavior."

____

DEFENSE:

The platform says Republicans are "the party of peace through strength" and support the concept of American exceptionalism ? "the conviction that our country holds a unique place and role in human history." It criticizes the current administration for its weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and its reductions in military spending. The Republican national military strategy "restores as a principal objective the deterrence using the full spectrum of our military capabilities."

Where to Buy Real Estate | Real Estate Investments Ugly Opportunities

When starting a real estate investing business, it?s always critical to decide where to buy real estate. ?The two main factors likely driving your decision are: Opportunity and Lifestyle. ?From an opportunity perspective, you need a ?farm area? big enough to satisfy your goals. ?Most successful real estate investors are opportunists, meaning they go where the opportunities are, near or far. ?Of course, that sometimes conflicts with your interests from a lifestyle perspective. ?From a lifestyle perspective, you likely want to stay as close to your office or home as possible. ?Plus, it?s easier to manage rehab projects and rental properties.

Where to buy real estate may also be impacted by where you already own other properties, in the case of rentals. ?If you happen to manage your own rentals, it?s of course easier to manage them if they?re close together. ?Of course, if you don?t manage your own rental properties, proximity to each other is less important.

If you?re serious about real estate investing, it?s critical to determine where you want to buy real estate so you can focus. ?Learn the area you plan to work well, and it will serve your business well. ?To learn about how to start or grow your real estate real estate investing career as part of the best investing team in America, please visitwww.uglyopportunities.com

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) ? Josh Nunes grew up in the shadows of Southern California's championships.

He had family and friends with UCLA roots, and no hint of football anywhere in his past.

Just a father who saw Stanford in his future.

Everything about the newly selected starting quarterback can be traced back to a single moment.

Tim Nunes came home one day when Josh was 8 years old, sneaked up from behind and plopped a red hat on his son's head. Josh looked at the logo, an "S'' with a tree in the middle, and smiled.

"He's like, 'Oh, what's this?'" his father said. "I said, 'That's where you belong. You're going to go there one day.'"

Never mind that they had no connection to the university.

Something about his son's smarts steered his father, who has a degree from UCLA, to push aside the Bruins and Trojans hats that day at the Chick's Sporting Goods near the family's home in Upland and reach for the Cardinal cap.

Josh "wore the heck of that hat," he said, even if it often fueled his friends.

He took French classes in high school because he read Stanford's admissions accepted more students who spoke that than Spanish as a secondary language ? "French came in real handy in Southern California," he joked.

His first college game was watching Trent Edwards and Stanford lose 21-0 to UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 30, 2004. He graduated high school with a 4.6 grade-point average, turning down offers from football powers Florida, Oklahoma and Tennessee among others for the Silicon Valley school.

"It just goes to show you," he said, "that I always wanted to be a Stanford man."

Now Nunes is THE Stanford man.

The redshirt junior quarterback will make his first collegiate start and begin the post-Andrew Luck era when No. 21 Stanford hosts San Jose State on Friday night.

Walking on campus last week, Nunes already was recognized by students and at least one elderly woman who promised to bring her camera and ask for a photo next time.

"I've had to pinch myself to make sure it's real," said his mother, Debbie.

Nunes grew up playing baseball, soccer and just about any sport but football. He struck out all 18 batters in a Little League game when he was 12 years old, his father said, and threw a four-seam fastball clocked in the 90s in high school and an overhand curve.

His dad, a private contractor, avoided Pop Warner Football "like the plague" for fear of injuries and overbearing coaches.

Not until flag football in the eighth grade did Nunes ever throw a pigskin competitively, and he doesn't even count freshman football at Upland High School because "I spent the whole year learning everything."

By the end of his sophomore season, then-Hawaii coach June Jones offered him a scholarship. Soon Urban Meyer at Florida and coaches from the Southeastern Conference to the renamed Pac-12 came calling.

"It kind of took us back like, 'Oh, this is something I might want to look into,'" Nunes said.

For Nunes, there really only was one choice.

He took recruiting visits to Stanford and Southern California for baseball, too, but committed to Stanford as soon as former football coach Jim Harbaugh offered him a scholarship and the admission's office approved his transcript.

Nunes is majoring in management science and engineering, which he describes as an "engineering degree with a business focus," particularly on entrepreneurship and start-ups.

He has taken an economics class taught by former Treasury Under Secretary John Taylor and engineering classes run by former Defense Secretary William Perry and nuclear policy expert Siegfried Hecker, emeritus director of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

During a course last year, Nunes teamed with wide receiver Sam Knapp and pitcher Mark Appel ? the eighth overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates who decided to return for his senior season ? formed their own start-up with a full-working website.

The idea was called "Coachbook," a website that allowed people to connect with instructors in their area. They even pitched the project to a panel of Silicon Valley venture capitalists.

"He was always one of the geek kids," his father said.

Northern California has become almost a second home for the Nunes family.

Josh's younger brother, Justin, is a redshirt freshman quarterback on the UC Davis team. The family tries to attend every game for both, although this year will be the first time either has played meaningful minutes.

Nunes threw two passes and completed one for 7 yards for Stanford in 2010. On the third practice of training camp last year, he dropped back to pass and stepped on running back Andrew Stutz's foot, tore a ligament underneath his right big toe, was in a boot through the first five games and had a steel plate that was completely rigid in his shoe when he returned to practice. He never played a down.

Stutz and Nunes just so happened to be stretching partners during the team's first practice at Stanford Stadium on Friday since Nunes won the quarterback competition against strong-armed sophomore Brett Nottingham. Stutz playfully told Nunes: "I got to be careful. You're the starting quarterback now."

Nunes was selected the starter more for the way he runs Stanford's complex offense and protecting the ball than his ability to make throws downfield, which is one of Nottingham's strengths.

In the end, second-year Stanford coach David Shaw said he chose the quarterback who allows him to "sleep well at night."

"Of all the empirical evidence we collected," Shaw said, "Josh was the most consistent."

Nunes knows replacing Luck, the two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up and No. 1 overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts, will not be easy.

He talks about how he's "not Andrew Luck" but good enough to make sure Stanford doesn't slip, how the offense has always been a run-first, balanced approach and confidently saying "I don't think we're holding anything back. The coaches expect us to do everything Andrew could do. Not to be Andrew, but to have the mental capacity that he did is definitely expected of us."

And perhaps why the competition to replace Luck lasted almost eight months.

Shaw informed Nunes, Nottingham and redshirt freshman Kevin Hogan of his decision before last Tuesday morning's practice.

Shaw sent Nunes a text shortly after 6 a.m. to be in his office later that morning ? Nunes has been up by 5:45 a.m. each day working out or receiving treatment ? and the quarterback nervously "got it like an hour after he sent it to be in his office soon."

Nunes said when Shaw broke the news "it was just great to hear him say it." He sent two quick text messages to his parents before practice.

His father had to fight tears. His mother Debbie, a business analyst with 21 years at Southern California Edison utility, was in the middle of what turned out to be a two-hour meeting with her boss.

When she returned to her desk and learned the news on her phone, she became so overwhelmed that co-workers began asking questions during another colleague's birthday luncheon.

"They thought my boss had done something to upset me," she said. "I had to tell them that they were happy tears."

The well wishes filtered in from teammates past and present, friends back home and former Stanford players. Nunes talked to his parents late that night. Luck's text message to Nunes was "typical Andrew," he said.

He congratulated Nunes and told him, "Now it's time to get to work."

Abstract

PURPOSE:

The World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research identified a probable role for garlic in colorectal cancer prevention?based?on preclinical?evidence?and epidemiologic studies, but prospective data are limited. The purpose of this paper was to contribute additional?evidence?on this topic for men and women in a large prospective cohort study.

METHODS:

In 1999, 42,824 men and 56,876 women in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort completed a questionnaire with information on dietary garlic consumption. Garlic supplement use was assessed in 2001. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard rate ratios (HRs) and 95?% confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS:

During 7?years of follow-up, 579 men and 551 women were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Among men, daily garlic consumption was associated with a non-significant higher colorectal cancer risk (HR?=?1.04, 95?% CI 0.99-1.08 for each additional clove or "4 shakes" of garlic per week), whereas the association was borderline inverse in women (HR?=?0.95, 95?% CI 0.91-1.00, p heterogeneity by sex?=?0.03). Garlic supplement use was not related to a lower risk of colorectal cancer, and in men, former use was associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer (HR?=?1.85, 95?% CI 1.13-3.03).

CONCLUSIONS:

These results provide weak support for a role of dietary garlic consumption in colorectal cancer prevention in women, but a possible increased risk in men. Further research is needed to confirm different associations by sex.

10 Deadly Internet Marketing Myths | David Wood's MLM Marketing ...

Internet Marketing Myths

You?ve read all about it. You?ve heard it all before?

That Internet Marketers just lay around in their?pajamas?all day barely working. That they spend all their time on the beach doing whatever the heck they want, travelling the world and driving expensive cars.

Or that the Internet Marketing lifestyle is working 2 hours/week making an easy 6 figures a year on ?autopilot?. The reality is most of what you read online about online marketing is total hyped up B.S. designed to get you to buy some info product.

Today I wanted to dismiss a bunch of deadly Internet Marketing myths and divulge some real information that you need to hear about the Internet Marketing niche.

1. Most Internet Marketers Are Full Of Shit

This piece of information is valuable beyond belief if you?re just getting started in the online marketing world or wanting to become another Frank Kern or Ryan Deiss.

The problem with the majority of Internet Marketers is that they all make their money in the Internet Marketing niche. The Internet Marketing niche basically consists of Make Money Online nonsense and traffic/lead/customer generation bullshit.

It?s Internet Marketers teaching other Internet Marketers Internet Marketing, how retarded is that (LOL)?

Internet Marketers have serious skills. They know how to market on Facebook, get top rankings and how to dominate social media. But what do they moronically do with their knowledge?

They sell it in the form of cheap info products to OTHER Internet Marketers for $7-$10 on the low end up to $50-$200 on the high end. They giveaway all their secrets to other Internet Marketers because every Internet Marketer wants to be another guru. The truth is you?d make 100 times more money using Internet Marketing outside of the Internet Marketing niche.

Don?t get dragged into the Internet Marketing community. It?s essentially this?incestuous?pit of money grabbers who all sell, buy and promote each others products.

99% of Internet Marketers in the Internet Marketing niche don?t have real businesses. They simply sell stuff to other Internet Marketers which is an awful business model since there?s 1000 times more money outside of IM.

Most IM products are based on theory since they don?t have real businesses to test the theory on. (I k

2. Internet Marketing Is Easy

Internet Marketing is by no means easy. If you?re building an IM business from scratch on a very limited budget it can take years to succeed ? the opposite of easy. Starting an online business isn?t so different from starting an offline business.

Internet Marketing requires hard work, dedication and strategic thinking just like anything else. There are no push button softwares that make millions; not yet anyway.

3. Internet Marketing Is Free

Internet Marketing is free? That?s just ridiculous. Internet Marketing could possibly cost nothing. I mean if you really wanted to build an online business from nothing, and I mean $0.00 ? you could but it?d take you several years.

Whether you want to do that to prove a point or something, I don?t know ? but it?s a terrible idea. If you have no money, get a job, borrow it or dig into your savings ? don?t start from scratch.

There are costs associated with every business and while Internet Marketing may not be free; you certainly can start it on a shoe string budget. For around $1000, you can start an online business quite easily ? but still not $0.00.

4. You Barely Have To Work

I would say that Internet Marketers spend more time working than most 9-5?ers. Not because they have to, because they want to.

You can quite easily work 2-4 hours a week and make a small living on the Internet. However, Internet Marketing is fun, enjoyable and addictive. That?s why Internet Marketers work for so many hours and late nights.

They either haven?t figured it out yet or are seriously enjoying themselves. In the beginning; expect to work hard and long hours. Once you?re properly setup, you can work as much as you want to.

5. You Can Just Take Off, Travel The World And Keep Getting Paid

This is what drags a lot of folks into the online world of marketing. The hype says Internet Marketing will just pay you automatically without you ever working. While that may be true only once you?ve built a system, the maximum you can really ?take off? for is 2-3 months. After that your business will probably collapse.

Internet Marketing is constantly evolving, if you don?t predict what?s to come, listen to the signals and adapt prior to a major shift ? you can lose everything.

6. Internet Marketing Is A Scam

Yes, there are hundreds of scam artists on the Internet. Yes, there are too many people selling sketchy black hat tricks, methods and software?

?and yes ? there are countless Nigerians out there waiting to steal your hard earned money. The fact is the offline world is crawling with far more scams than the Internet. Fortunately online scams are easy to point out.

With enough research you can find high quality products that give real value?

?and yes ? Internet Marketers do make money from completely legal, safe products that help real people.

7. $100,000 In 30 Days

Unless you?re a genius or have hundreds of thousands behind you, there?s no such thing as Instant Internet Riches. Anyone who guarantees your success is not to be trusted. Normal people are making fortunes online, but none of them overnight ? despite what Clickbank sales pages might say.

8. Internet Marketing Is For Computer Geeks

This one is quite annoying. Just because I make a living online does not mean I know anything about computers. I probably know slightly more than most people only because of the sheer number of hours I spend online each week.

I know the very basics and that?s all that is required.

Windows Explorer, Google Chrome, Gmail, Downloading, Saving, Zipping/Unzipping, Attaching Files and Microsoft Word are all you really need to understand. The complex stuff like web design and programming should always be outsourced.

9. It?s All About Traffic

More traffic means more money, right? Traffic is all that matters, right?

No and definitely not. Traffic is for scaling up your online business. More traffic doesn?t directly translate into more revenue.

Online marketing is all about conversions. Converting traffic into leads and leads into customers. Conversions are 100 times more important than traffic generation. Any idiot can generate visitors, but only the masters are able to persuade A LOT of them to buy.

Websites that get 100 visitors/day can generate far more revenue than sites getting 1000 visitors/day or more. It?s all in the conversions. Traffic is only useful when you have the system in place to convert it.

Not all traffic will convert with your offer. You can shape your offer for a particular group of people, but ultimately you need to shape your marketing to capture right people and not the other way around.
