Mobile giant America Movil SAB will be launching fourth-generation high speed wireless services in Mexico in September, board member Carlos Slim Domit said Monday.
The "first devices with 4G technology will be in the Mexican market in two months," Mr. Slim Domit, the eldest son of the world's richest man Carlos Slim, said in an interview on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Los Cabos.
"We expect a very quick expansion during next year," he added.
Fourth-generation wireless technology, also known as long-term evolution, or LTE, offer downloads and uploads up to 10 times faster than the existing 3G technology.Mr. Slim Domit is also chairman of Telefonos de Mexico SAB, Mexico's main Internet and fixed-line phone provider that was bought out by America Movil last year. Telmex currently controls around 80% of Mexico's fixed line market, while America Movil has about 70% of the mobile phone business.
Mr. Slim Domit said America Movil isn't interested in bidding for spectrum to launch a third TV network in Mexico, and said the company is focusing on transmitting broadcast-quality video through mobile phones.
The Mexican TV market is dominated by the duopoly formed by networks Televisa and TV Azteca, but the country's telecommunications regulator has recently approved a program that could include up to two networks using digital technology.
