But the church is not happy about its name being associated with the couple's marriage woes, according to one ex-member,?Mark "Marty" Rathbun. On his?blog, he shared an email he said was sent Thursday to members??from the church's Office of Special Affairs about "...?how to fight back on the internet and Stand Up For Your Religion":

"An email from a Scientologist is no more from the Church of Scientology?than an email from a Catholic is from the Vatican," the church said in a statement to msnbc.com. "This did not come?from the Church or anyone associated with the Church, nor is it a?Church plan."

Insurer Aviva culls units in turnaround drive

LONDON (Reuters) - Aviva , Britain's No.2 insurer, plans to sell or close more than a quarter of its businesses in a shake-up aimed at regaining the support of investors irked by the group's flagging share price.

The company, whose weak stock market performance led to the removal of chief executive Andrew Moss in May, will axe 16 lame- duck businesses that account for 18 percent of operating profit, it said on Thursday.

"They've at last got to the nub of the matter which is that they've got lots of business units that are not making a proper return on risk capital," said Investec analyst Kevin Ryan.

"But clearly there's enormous execution risk in that this is not an environment in which to try and sell."

The assets earmarked for sale or closure include Aviva's South Korean arm, its bulk purchase annuity unit, and its stake in Dutch rival Delta Lloyd.

Aviva said, after the market closed, that it would sell up to 25 million shares in Delta Lloyd, equivalent to a 14 percent stake. It said an accelerated book built has begun, with Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs joint book runners.

Shares in Delta Lloyd closed at 11.6 euros on Thursday, valuing the stake up for sale at around 290 million euros (231.3 million pounds). The sale would leave Aviva with a 27 percent shareholding.

On Thursday evening, however, Aviva made a further announcement saying it intended to increase the number of shares being sold to 37 million.

The insurer declined to name the other assets up for sale, as doing so might hinder efforts to sell them. Analysts said Aviva's sizeable U.S. arm, acquired for 2 billion pounds in 2006, was probably also on the block.

The disposals are designed to bolster Aviva's capital reserves to counter worries that the insurer's focus on mainland Europe has made it vulnerable to losses on its holdings of distressed euro zone sovereign debt.

Aviva's regulatory capital buffer fell by a third between July and September last year as the escalating crisis in the euro area triggered sharp falls in the value of bonds issued by heavily indebted governments.

The insurer said it sold 2 billion euros of Italian sovereign debt in June, reducing its holding to 5 billion euros, and also flagged up to 400 million pounds of cost cuts to be achieved in part by a cull of middle management.

BUYERS SCARCE

Aviva shares closed up 1.1 percent, outperforming a 0.6 percent drop in the Stoxx 600 European insurance index <.sxip>. The stock has still lost about third of its value in the past year against a 10 percent decline for the sector as a whole.

"It's a bold effort, but there aren't too many buyers lined up on the other side," said one top 40 institutional shareholder.

"I think they've got a long way to go."

Most insurers in Europe and the U.S. have put acquisitions on hold as low interest rates, faltering economic growth and tougher capital requirements crimp their finances.

Aviva Chairman John McFarlane, in day-to-day control since Moss quit, said there would be no need to raise equity or cut the dividend provided economic conditions did not deteriorate, adding that the insurer would prefer to sell assets if they did.

"At the end of the plan, Aviva will be focused, financially strong and performing," he told reporters on a conference call.

"I believe I can make a difference here."

A further 27 of Aviva's 58 units, including its general insurance business in Ireland, "require significant improvement," Aviva said.

"We wanted someone to come in and get to grips with the problem," a second institutional shareholder said.

"He's come out with about as much as one could hope for."

The overhaul should feed through into Aviva's financial results by 2014, and will be led by David McMillan, formerly head of Aviva's general insurance operations in Britain and Ireland, McFarlane said.

Aviva has hired head-hunters Spencer Stuart to help it find a new chief executive, and an appointment is expected in early 2013, he added.

Anthony Smith, Former Oakland Raiders Defensive End, Faces 4 Counts Of Murder

LOS ANGELES, July 5 (Reuters) - Former Oakland Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith, whose murder trial stemming from a 2008 shooting death ended in a hung jury, was charged this week with three more Los Angeles County slayings from several years earlier.
The new criminal complaint, filed on Monday, charges Smith, 43, with a total of four counts of first-degree murder, incorporating the original case against him and the kidnap-killings of three other men - one in 1999 and two in 2001.
Special allegations listed in the complaint say the three earlier victims were tortured before being killed.
An arraignment has been set for July 17 on the new charges, and Smith remains held without bond, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Sandi Gibbons, said on Thursday.
Smith's lawyer, Michael Evans, said his client would plead not guilty to all the charges and that the new criminal complaint came as a "surprise to all of us."
Smith, a first-round 1990 draft pick of the Raiders, then based in Los Angeles, and an 11th pick overall for the National Football League that year, played all seven seasons of his NFL career for the Raiders, first in Los Angeles and then in Oakland.
Evans said he was informed of the new charges just 45 minutes before jury selection was set to begin on Monday in the retrial of the original case charging Smith with murder in the October 2008 slaying of an associate named Maurilio Ponce.
The first jury deadlocked 8-to-4 in favor of a guilty verdict, leading to a mistrial.
The latest felony complaint charges Smith with three additional counts of first-degree murder in connection with the November 1999 slayings of brothers Kevin and Ricky Nettles, and the June 2001 killing of Dennis Henderson.
According to Gibbons, the Nettles brothers were abducted from a car wash in Los Angeles by two individuals posing as police officers and were found shot to death the next day.
About 19 months later, Henderson and another man, Terry Ware, were kidnapped in Los Angeles by several armed suspects, placed in separate cars and driven away. Ware was freed but Henderson's body was found in the back of a rental car the next day. He had been beaten and stabbed to death, Gibbons said.
Gibbons said she had no further information about a possible motive or circumstances behind the killings. She said prosecutors would decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Smith. Homicide detectives assigned to the case were not immediately available for comment.
Smith was charged in February 2011 along with two other men in connection with the slaying of Ponce, who was found shot to death on a remote roadside in Lancaster, California, north of Los Angeles, on Oct. 7, 2008.
The defense has acknowledged that Smith and Ponce were once involved together in a cargo theft, and that Smith was seen driving Ponce's car a month after he was slain.
But Evans has insisted that his client had nothing to do with Ponce's murder and argued during the trial that police lacked any physical evidence, such as DNA, fingerprints or gunpowder residue, linking him to the crime.
He said Ponce had given Smith his car when Ponce stopped being able to make payments on it.
Evans said he could not comment in detail about the three additional slayings because he had not yet seen evidence that prosecutors will be required to share with him. (Editing by Peter Cooney)

Carmaker Volkswagen finalizes Porsche takeover

BERLIN (AP) ? German carmaker Volkswagen says it is on track to finalize the full takeover of sports car manufacturer Porsche by the end of the month.

Volkswagen AG said in a statement late Wednesday Porsche AG will become another fully integrated brand of the Volkswagen group as of August 1.

The Wolfsburg-based group, Europe's biggest carmaker, includes brands such as Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Bugatti, Benley and truck makers MAN and Scania.

The deal is also set to restructure the companies' complicated ownership ties.

Volkswagen says the missing 50.1 percent in Porsche AG's capital will be bought from holding company Porsche SE for ?4.46 billion ($5.61 billion) plus one Volkswagen share. Porsche SE, in turn, currently holds a sizeable stake in Volkswagen and several executives and major shareholders are active in both firms.
