Blog : Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Below Vulnerable to Clickjacking Rootkit
A recent study by Xuxian Jiang, computer science professor at North Carolina State University, describes in a recent video how his research team developed a rootkit that could silently install on Android devices. Jiang demonstrates how this rootkit could install malware on your system and sync with existing apps. Allowing something like your browser app to quietly record its activity by replacing functionality of a trusted app with another, potentially stealing banking information or other sensitive data.
This malware affects anyone running Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) and below ? making up currently 100 percent of the Android consumer market. Google does seem to acknowledge recent malware reports, by enabling app encryption within its Google Play store, for the first time ever, on any device running its latest Jelly Bean operating system (Android 4.1) and above.
But while Jelly Bean remains in developer preview, penetration of new Android OS in the market is hardly timely. ICS has just expanded to approximately 10 percent of Android devices according to Google, but it took seven months to get to this point. Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) has just arrived on only 65 percent of Android devices, a year and a half after its initial release. So although this threat could be irrelevant to users with Jelly Bean, expansion of this OS and patch updates to resolve current vulnerabilities could take months, even a year to resolve.
Unlike common malware found on Android, Jiang?s prototype rootkit attacks the framework of Android, as opposed to the underlying operating system Linux kernel. This makes it easier for malware to control multiple assets within the same system, and hide in plain sight posing as trusted apps.
?This would be a more sophisticated type of attack than we?ve seen before,? states Jiang in a recent North Carolina State University abstract, ?Specifically tailored to smartphone platforms. The rootkit was not that difficult to develop, and no existing mobile security software is able to detect it. But there is good news. Now that we?ve identified the problem, we can begin working on ways to protect against attacks like these.?
Jiang?s optimism is right, but Android?s main challenge has always been its fragmentation. In the early days, it helped an aesthetically inferior OS compared to iOS (used on iPhones) get off the ground through manufacturer differentiation (HTC Sense, Motoblur). But as Android continues to grow as the world?s most popular mobile OS ? now activating 1 million devices daily ? Android?s fragmentation could hurt consumers if Google can?t control its open source project and the malware that comes with it.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Jeneba Tarmoh has made the U.S. track and field team for the London Olympics, joining Allyson Felix, Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin on the 127-athlete roster.
Tarmoh was selected as a member of the relay pool after withdrawing from a runoff Monday for the final Olympic spot in the 100 meters. She conceded her position rather than meet Felix at the starting line to break a third-place tie.
Jeremy Wariner, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, also made the squad as part of the relay pool. Wariner didn't qualify for a spot in the 400 at U.S. track trials.
The roster announced Tuesday includes four reigning Olympic champions: Lashawn Merritt (400), Angelo Taylor (400 hurdles), Dawn Harper (100 hurdles) and Stephanie Brown-Trafton (discus). It also includes 19 American record holders.

Increase in track-related injuries found among youth in the United States
ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? With the 2012 summer Olympic games about to take place in London, children everywhere are looking forward to watching their sports idols and role models take center stage. While the Olympics may inspire some to try a new sport, such as track, parents should be aware that this participation does not come without risk of injury.
A new study by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that from 1991 through 2008 more than 159,000 children and adolescents between 10 and 18 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments for track-related injuries. The annual number of track-related injuries increased 36 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 7,702 in 1991 to 10,496 in 2008.
"Participation in track is a great way to encourage children and adolescents to remain physically active," said Lara McKenzie, PhD, principal investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy and senior author of the study. "However, the increase in injuries corresponding with the increased participation in this activity suggests we need to do a better job of preventing track-related injuries among our young athletes."
According to the study, published in the journal, The Physician and Sportsmedicine, the most common injury diagnoses were sprains and/or strains (52 percent) and fractures or dislocations (17 percent). The study looked at seven different track-related activities -- sprinting, cross country, running, hurdles, relays, stretching and/or drills, and "other" activities. The most common activities being performed at the time of injury were running (59 percent) and hurdles (23 percent).
"We found that the most commonly injured body parts varied across activity and across age group. For instance, elementary students were more likely to sustain upper extremity injuries while high school students were more likely to sustain lower leg injuries," said Dr. McKenzie, also a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "With this in mind, track-related injury prevention efforts may need to be tailored by activity for different age groups in order to most effectively address the injury concerns the athletes are facing."
This is the first study to use a nationally representative sample to examine track-related injuries that were treated in U.S. emergency departments. Data for this study were obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), which is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The NEISS provides information on consumer product-related and sports and recreation-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments across the country.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Unionized workers with Consolidated Edison in New York City will be picketing as their leadership plots their next move following failed contract talks and a lockout.
A union spokesman said Harry Farrell, president of Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America, on Monday will call for federal mediators to intervene to get talks started again.
Both sides said there are many issues on which they have not reached agreement.
Negotiations stopped just before 2 a.m. Sunday, a couple of hours after the existing contract expired. The impasse came as New York braced for more high temperatures that will increase demand for air conditioning among the utility's 3.2 million customers.
There were about 200 outages overnight, nearly all of which were resolved by morning, Con Ed spokesman Chris Olert said Monday. He said management personnel were standing by, ready to address any problems.
Con Ed closed walk-in centers, suspended meter readings and limited work on major construction projects in New York after the talks broke down.
On Sunday morning, police set up barricades in front of Con Ed's headquarters near Manhattan's Union Square.
"This is crazy! There's a heat wave," said David Palomino, a facility mechanic who rushed to headquarters after finishing his early shift to find out what was coming next. He was one of few workers there; a union official said more picketing was planned for Monday.
"The fight has escalated" between the two sides, Palomino said, explaining that workers fear losing chunks of their pensions and benefits.
Temperatures were in the 90s Sunday and were expected to be in the high 80s and low 90s throughout the week.
Frank Allen is making sure the heat doesn't blow his power at home in upper Manhattan. "I turn off the air conditioner when I leave home," said Allen, 61, who was shopping in the Union Square neighborhood.
"It's not too good when the wires go out, and there's no one to fix them, Allen said. "The workers should get whatever they deserve ? just do it for us, Con Ed."
He has cats at home, but he's not worried leaving them without air conditioning. "They find their way to some cool corner."
And when he goes to work, heat is far from a problem: Allen works in a 33-degree space, in the refrigeration unit of the Fresh Direct food delivery company in Queens' Long Island City.
"In a heat wave, I wear long johns."
At an electronics and air conditioning retailer across the street from Con Ed, manager Ramon Nieves said there have been multiple power outages in recent years in his Queens neighborhood.
"I'm mad at Con Ed ? what are they thinking?" he said. "A lot of people could get sick in this heat."
He said his store sold about 35 percent more air conditioners this month than in the same, cooler period last year.
The extreme weather included vicious storms from Indiana to New Jersey and south to Virginia that left 17 people dead and 2.7 million without power. Most of the damage came in the mid-Atlantic region, and only scattered outages across Con Ed's service area in New York were reported as of Sunday. Con Ed said it is keeping a close watch on its system and has trained managers working on essential operations.
The 8,500 unionized workers told the company they'd be willing to work without a contract to keep the power company running, said John Melia, spokesman for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America.
"We did everything to avert this action," he said. "We recognize that New York City is sweltering right now. ... We recognize we have a responsibility to the people of New York City and Westchester County," the suburban county north of the city.
He disputed the company's claim that its managers could do the job of the union workers.
"They know what happens in a heat wave, they know they don't have the expertise to fix it," he said. "They don't have the technical knowledge."
Con Ed said it had wanted a two-week extension of the current contract while negotiations continued, with assurance that the union would not strike without notice. The company said it offered such an extension, signing an agreement to that effect, but that the union didn't sign it. Con Ed said if the union agreed to the extension, employees would be welcomed back.
Negotiations lasted just over 10 days over a range of issues, including pensions, heath care and wages.
"This is very unfortunate. Both sides are very far part," Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin said.
Melia said the union negotiators were kicked out of the room in what he called a "union-busting tactic."
"This is not a labor issue," he said. "This is a corporate monopoly."
He said the two sides had been talking when the company demanded the union sign the contract extension, and that Con Ed locked workers out when the union said it preferred to keep talking and keep workers at the jobs without a contract in the interim.
