Amazon Studios expands into TV series, looks to load up on content for streaming

Amazon has had a content development division for some time but today it's announced plans to expand from just movies to developing (and distributing, via its Instant Video service) original comedy and children's series. The new focus follows the competition like Netflix and Hulu which have both dived headlong into developing original TV show-style content that mirrors the content consumers seem to gravitate towards on streaming services. According to the press release Amazon Studios is willing to option one "promising project" per month for $10k and pay $55k to a creator if their series is selected for distribution. Submissions of 22-minute pilot scripts for comedies and 11-minute pilot scripts for children's shows are being accepted, which Amazon will either option within 45 days or the creator can choose between pulling it back and leaving it up for community feedback. There's more info at the site or in the press release after the break, but just remember: if we see any series picked up about dashingly handsome tech bloggers and the fast-paced lives they lead, we're coming for our cut.

Kate Upton Does "Cat Daddy" Dance in Bikini, 50 Million Males Lose Concentration at Work

Sports Illustrated cover girl Kate Upton is busting out (her moves) to a new dance, called the Cat Daddy, and Terry Richardson filmed her demonstrating it.

We have no idea what inspired this ... though it's pretty obvious.

Richardson, a noted fashion photographer perhaps best known for his many provocative Lindsay Lohan photos, may have set the bar too high here.

After all, how can you ever top this ... at least if you're a guy?

Kate Upton isn't opposed to showing off her dance moves online, having done the "Dougie" in a similar video back when that was big. Like eight months ago.

T-Mobile Prism leaked: entry-level Huawei smartphone to launch in May

While the design (and even the briefing slides) scream affordable, we're sure there must be some Big Magenta customers aching for a keenly-priced smartphone fix. So here's the Prism. Huawei's behind that T-Mobile face, cooking up a Android Gingerbread phone with a pretty weedy 600MHz processor and a 3.5-inch (480 x 320) touchscreen. A fixed-focus (yeah) 3.2-megapixel camera pokes out the back, while a microSD slot means you can extend space for those vaguely-almost-in-focus shots -- the Prism arrives with a 2GB card already onboard. The phone looks set for a May 6th release date and TmoNews has several more slides with some extra launch details -- you can check them out at the source below.

Google Improves App Advertising With New Mobile App Extension

mobile app extension approvedGoogle is announcing some new search advertising features designed to help advertisers drive more app downloads, and to track those downloads. The first feature, an Ad Extension, seems aimed at companies who have both a standard Web presence and an app to promote. Should a company like GrubHub (which was part of the beta test) advertise for its website or its app? Hard to say, since people might be looking for either. So with the new Mobile App extension, advertisers can do both, adding a link to the iPhone or Android app below the regular search ad. Apparently, campaigns with the ad extension saw 6 percent higher clickthrough rates than those without it during the beta.

What will become of Brock Lesnar's demands?

In the wake of the bloody battle that transpired between John Cena and Brock Lesnar at WWE Extreme Rules, the eyes of the WWE Universe now turn to John Laurinaitis to see how the General Manager of Raw and SmackDown will handle the recent requests of the ?new face of WWE.?

Before he signed on the dotted line to face the Cenation leader in an Extreme Rules Match, Lesnar made a series of demands to Laurinaitis on Raw SuperShow last Monday that the freakish brute expected to be fulfilled in short order. WWE?s Executive Vice President of Talent Relations admitted in a WWE.com exclusive interview that he was taken aback by Lesnar?s demands before conceding that he would find a way to make them work. (WATCH)

Whether Laurinaitis will acquiesce to Lesnar?s demands remains to be seen. It is unclear whether Laurinaitis even has the authority to grant the former three-time WWE Champion with a pay raise or exclusive use of WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon?s private jet ? not to mention Lesnar?s unprecedented requirement that WWE?s marquee show should now be referred to as ?Monday Night Raw, Starring Brock Lesnar.? Even if he does, can Laurinaitis come through on those terms before the WWE Universe descends upon Dayton, Ohio tonight?

Moreover, the terms of their agreement may not sit well with the WWE Board of Directors. WWE COO Triple H contacted Laurinaitis during Extreme Rules to discuss a pressing matter of unknown origin. It?s no secret that Triple H and Laurinaitis have not seen eye-to-eye since the latter drew scrutiny for his seemingly personal vendetta against WWE Champion CM Punk earlier this year. Could Triple H be chiming in now because he is unhappy with the revised arrangement between Lesnar and Laurinaitis? Or could he possibly be planning another performance review of the undisputed GM of Raw and SmackDown? Is Laurinaitis' job on the line due to these events? Could tonight be the night he loses control of both brands?

The ramifications of Extreme Rules may have created more dilemmas than it resolved, but be sure to tune into Raw SuperShow live tonight at 9/8 CT to see how Laurinaitis, Lesnar and Triple H finally get some answers.

The Seven Forces Disrupting Venture Capital

shift keyFor the past two years, I have read or glanced over what seems like hundreds of blog posts and thousands of tweets from people who either directly claim or indirectly hint at a disruption of traditional venture capital. For some, the factors related to the economy, that limited partners and especially institutional investors were reviewing their investment approaches. For others, it seemed as if there was too much money in the venture asset class, that there was too much money chasing too few real opportunities. There seemed to be a long laundry list of why venture capital was undergoing this shift, but never any thread that could lay out all the factors and synthesize just how each factor contributed to shift. That is, until now..
