Van Cliburn, the internationally celebrated pianist whose triumph at a 1958 Moscow competition helped thaw the Cold War and launched a spectacular career that made him the rare classical musician to enjoy rock-star status, died Wednesday after a long illness.

Cliburn died at his home in Fort Worth surrounded by loved ones, said his publicist and longtime friend Mary Lou Falcone.

The Grammy winner had made his last public appearance in September at the 50th anniversary of the prestigious piano competition in Fort Worth named in his honor. To a roaring standing ovation, he saluted many past contestants, the orchestra and the city, saying: "Never forget: I love you all from the bottom of my heart, forever."

"His legacy is one of being a great humanitarian, a great musician, a great colleague, and a great friend to all who knew and loved him. Van is iconic," said Carla Kemp Thompson, chairwoman of the Van Cliburn Foundation, which hosts the competition. "(We) join the international community in mourning the loss of a true giant."

Cliburn skyrocketed to fame when he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at age 23 in 1958, six months after the Soviets' launch of Sputnik embarrassed the US and propelled the world into the space age. He triumphantly returned to a New York City ticker tape parade ? the first ever for a classical musician ? and a Time magazine cover proclaimed him "The Texan Who Conquered Russia."

But the win also proved the power of the arts, bringing unity in the midst of strong rivalry. Despite the tension between the nations, Cliburn became a hero to music-loving Soviets who clamored to see him perform and Premier Nikita Khrushchev reportedly gave the go-ahead for the judges to honor a foreigner: "Is Cliburn the best? Then give him first prize."

In the years that followed, Cliburn's popularity soared, and the young man from the small east Texas town of Kilgore sold out concerts, caused riots when spotted in public and even prompted an Elvis Presley fan club to change its name to his. His recording of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with Russian conductor Kirill Kondrashin became the first classical album to reach platinum status.

Time magazine's 1958 cover story quoted a friend as saying Cliburn could become "the first man in history to be a Horowitz, Liberace and Presley all rolled into one."

Cliburn performed for royalty, heads of state in Europe, Asia and South America, and for every US president since Harry Truman.

DARPA trying again to develop a high-speed VTOL aircraft

DARPA trying again to develop a highspeed VTOL aircraft

If at first your unmanned aerial vehicles don't succeed... try, try again? After a series of unsuccessful tests with the Boeing X-50 Dragonfly and Groen Heliplane, the US government is once again trying to develop a high-speed, vertical takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) aircraft. DARPA just announced the VTOL X-Plane program, a 52-month, $130 million project with one mission: to build an aircraft that can exceed 300 knots, achieve a hover efficiency of 75 percent or better, and hit a cruise lift-to-drag ratio of 10 or more.

In layman's terms, such an aircraft would be faster than a traditional helicopter, but still have better hover efficiency than a modern high-speed 'copter. Sounds like a sensible idea, right? The thing is, DARPA doesn't know yet how such a thing would look: for now, the agency is merely soliciting proposals, with a particular emphasis on smaller, non-traditional companies nimble enough to develop products quickly. So if you've got any good ideas, may as well head on over to the source link, we guess, and try your luck.

Two California police officers killed in line of duty

KNBC

By Erika Conner and Lisa Fernandez, NBCLosAngeles.com

The Santa Cruz, Calif., County Sheriff's Department says two Santa Cruz police officers were shot to death Tuesday afternoon ? the first time?in city history that officers were killed in the line of duty.

One suspect was also killed.

Authorities believe there are no more outstanding suspects or any danger to the community, but they are going door-to-door in the perimeter they've established as a precaution.?

A resident, who declined to give his name, said he was sitting in his house in the 800 block of North Branciforte Avenue when he heard gunfire across the street around 3:30 p.m. Police arrived soon, he said. That's when a suspect fired at police, hitting the two officers.

A while later, he heard a "multitude of gunfire" coming from an area nearby. He said police told residents to stay inside and not to leave.?

Following the incident, schools in the immediate area were placed on lockdown.?

Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said at news conference,?"Our department is in mourning. This is a horrific day in my career as the police chief and for our community and for our police department. We lost two exceptionally fine officers today."

"We need to figure out a way to bring our department together and get through this," Vogel added.?"It's a horrible, horrible day for the Santa Cruz Police Department and the community of Santa Cruz."?

After the police were killed, a second shooting occurred a half-hour later while police were in pursuit of at least one suspect, maybe two on Doyle Street. A barrage of gunfire erupted that apparently left a suspect dead on Doyle Street, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Police were on a citywide manhunt for several hours after the initial shooting. The FBI joined the investigation just after 4 p.m. as well as law enforcement from the sheriff's office, Capitola, Watsonville and Scotts Valley police departments and the California Highway Patrol.

NBC Bay Area's George Kiriyama and Bay City News contributed to this report.

Michelle Obama surprises Oscars by presenting Best Picture award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday's Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.

Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama "Argo" the Best Picture winner.

Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year's nominated films had "made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter."

Obama added: "They reminded us we can overcome any obstacles if we dig deep enough and hard enough. They are especially important for young people. Everyday they engage in the arts, they learn to open their imaginations ... and strive to reach those dreams."

"Argo" director and co-producer Ben Affleck said he felt like he was "sort of hallucinating" when Obama presented the award.

"The fact that it was the first lady was an enormous honor ... it was very cool," Affleck said backstage after collecting the Best Picture trophy.

Sports ? Fans hurt as crash mars NASCAR race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla ?

A frightening, fiery crash sent Kyle Larson?s car airborne and debris spinning into the stands injured dozens of race fans Saturday at the NASCAR stock car Nationwide Series season-opener.

Joie Chitwood, president of Daytona International Speedway, said 14 injured fans had been transported from the circuit for treatment at local hospitals and 14 more were treated at the track?s medical facility.

He said he could not confirm reports that at least two people were seriously hurt and that one was taken immediately for surgery.

?It?s not appropriate for me to comment on that,? Chitwood said in a press conference held at the circuit some three hours after the wreck.

Various media reports put the number of injured at more than 30, with ESPN reporting that one adult had life-threatening head trauma and a 14-year-old was in critical but not life-threatening condition in hospital.

The wreck, which occurred almost as Tony Stewart was taking the checkered flag for victory, began when race leader Regan Smith turned sideways and a dozen cars bunched behind him.

?My fault,? admitted Smith. ?I threw a block.?

Larson, a Japanese-American driver who was making his first start in NASCAR?s second-tier series, was launched into the catch-fencing.

?I was getting pushed from behind, and by the time my spotter said, ?Lift,? it was too late,? said Larson, who was able to climb out of what remained of his vehicle.

?I had some flames come in the cockpit. I was alright and could get out of the car quickly. It was definitely a big hit.?

Larson?s car tore a hole in the fence separating the track from the stands. His engine sheared off with at least one tire and other debris flying into the grandstand.

?I looked in the mirror and that?s the worst image I?ve ever seen in a race in my life,? Stewart said.

A fan who identified himself only as ?Tyler? sent amateur video to ESPN and spoke with the sports network about the scary scene.

?I saw a tire about 10 feet from me, just a row above me with a man under it and people yelling for help,? he said in a telephone interview.

?Our prayers and thoughts are with everybody they are working on,? NASCAR President Mike Helton said of those being treated by medical personnel.

None of the drivers involved in the crash was injured, but driver Michael Annett was hospitalized with chest bruising after hitting a safety barrier in an earlier crash in the race.

?We?ve always known since racing started this is a dangerous sport,? a subdued Stewart said. ?As much as we want to celebrate, I?m more concerned about the fans and the drivers right now.?

Chitwood said speedway and NASCAR officials responded appropriately and according to their safety protocols, with emergency personnel in place and able to begin work promptly.

Steve O?Donnell, NASCAR?s senior vice president for racing operations, said the entire incident would be reviewed to see what, if any, changes could be made to improve safety.

Until then, he declined to speculate on what went wrong or right.

?We need to take the time to really study it and see what we can improve on,? O?Donnell said.

The race came on the eve of the season-opening event in NASCAR?s top-flight Sprint Cup series, the Daytona 500.

Both O?Donnell and Chitwood said they expected Sunday?s race to start on schedule.

?We expect to go racing tomorrow with no changes,? Chitwood said.

Danica Patrick will start the Daytona 500 from pole position after becoming the first woman to top qualifying for a NASCAR race.

Patrick had also picked up a ride for Saturday?s race, driving for Turner Scott Motorsports. She suffered engine failure early on and wasn?t involved in the late-race chaos.

The Witness is headed to PlayStation 4, the next game from Braid creator Jonathan Blow

The Witness is headed exclusively to PlayStation 4, the next game from Braid creator Jonathan Blow

Nothing could've been more delightful than Braid creator Jonathan Blow suddenly walking on-stage at Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal only to make fun of all the explosions the event had already featured. Oh sure, he was also at the event to reveal that his latest game, The Witness, is headed to Sony's PlayStation 4 (as well as to PC and iOS, as the reveal trailer elucidates), but the first statement was much funnier. Anyway, the game looks much, much better than the various demos we've played across the past few years -- Blow's been developing The Witness for quite some time, and showing it publicly, albeit never on a PlayStation 4. We'll hopefully hear more in the coming days, so keep an eye out.

Update: This post originally stated that The Witness was heading exclusively to the PlayStation 4, when in fact it's only "console exclusive" to the PlayStation 4. It will also launch on iOS and PC. We've added the new trailer below the break.

Germany To Deploy Several Hundred Troops To Mali

Deutsche Welle
February 19, 2013

German Cabinet approves troop deployment to Mali

Members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel?s Cabinet have approved plans to send several hundred German soldiers to Mali. The Cabinet set a higher number than will initially be deployed in case the war escalates.

Up to 330 troops are slated to aid the UN-mandated mission in Mali, according to initial reports released after the Tuesday morning meeting in Berlin. The German Cabinet approved two separate mandates, one of which is to provide a maximum of 180 soldiers for an EU-led training mission for Malian forces. The second foresees sending up to 150 troops for logistical support.

?

According to the green-lighted plans, 40 soldiers will initially be deployed to assist in the training of Malian troops. The German armed forces are to send an additional 40 specialists to a field hospital.

The second draft mandate aims to strengthen logistical support, which Germany has been providing since the beginning of the French-African led mission in January. In addition to its planes already transporting troops from neighboring countries to Mali, it is to send three Transall aircrafts.

The German Cabinet also pledged to send an Airbus for aerial refueling of French fighter jets.

Tuesday?s decision by Germany?s Cabinet followed closely after the EU foreign ministers had agreed to begin deploying a military training mission to the West African nation, a plan which had been in development since the beginning of the UN-mandated mission in January.

The European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM), which currently has a mandate of 15 months and an upward limit of 500 soldiers, expects to commence its reform of the Malian army within the coming months.

By mid-March, the number of EU soldiers in Bamako is expected to reach nearly 150, double the amount of troops currently stationed in the Malian capital. An estimated 200 European military advisors are to begin training four Malian battalions of 640 men each by the start of the following month.

In January, France launched a military intervention?

Germany approves troops deployment in Mali

BERLIN: The German government approved on Tuesday the deployment of up to 330 soldiers in Mali for an EU-led training mission and logistical support for France?s mission in the West African country.

Chancellor Angela Merkel?s cabinet met on Tuesday morning, approving two separate mandates including sending a maximum of 180 soldiers for the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) and sending up to 150 troops to strengthen logistical support for the French and African troops?in Mali.

According to local media reports, the deployment would make Germany the second-biggest contributor to the EUTM mission behind France.

?

The deployment plans now needs the approval of the German parliament, which will deliberate over the proposals before the end of the week.

France has been carrying out a military intervention within the mandate of a U.N. resolution since January in Mali to respond to the West African country?s request for military assistance to counter its rebel groups? offensive.

China rejects status as world's biggest trader

BEIJING (AP) ? China has a new status its government doesn't want ? world's biggest trader.

Official Chinese and American trade data indicates China passed the United States last year in total imports and exports by a margin of $3.866 trillion to $3.822 trillion. That is about $44 billion, or just over 1 percent of China's total.

The Commerce Ministry has taken the unusual step of publicly denying China is the new No. 1. It says China still trailed the U.S. by $15.6 billion last year ? or a razor-thin 0.3 percent ? under World Trade Organization standards for valuing goods.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE ? This story is part of "China's Reach," a project tracking China's influence on its trading partners over three decades and exploring how that is changing business, politics and daily life. Keep up with AP's reporting on China's Reach, and join the conversation about it, using the hashtag (hash)APChinaReach on Twitter.

___

Beijing wants to be a global leader but insists it still is a poor country. It is wary of any change that might erode that status and fuel demands for action to stimulate the global economy or concessions on trade and climate change.

"I think there is some concern from the Ministry of Commerce that this might be used as evidence by Western countries that China is not doing its part to rebalance the global economy," said Xianfang Ren, China analyst for IHS Global Insight.

China's explosive trade growth has abruptly altered global business. It created new opportunities for some but prompted complaints by the United States and others over its multibillion-dollar trade surpluses, market barriers and currency controls.

In just five years, China has surpassed the United States as a trading partner for much of the world, including American allies such as South Korea and Australia, according to an Associated Press analysis of trade data.

As recently as 2006, the U.S. was the larger trading partner for 127 countries, versus just 70 for China. By 2011 the two had clearly traded places: 124 countries for China, 76 for the U.S.

Trade is especially sensitive amid anxiety over a possible global slowdown. Beijing's trading partners accused it of hampering a recovery from the 2008 crisis by obstructing access to its market.

For 2012, Beijing reported a $231 billion global trade surplus on exports of $2.049 trillion and imports of $1.818 trillion. The United States reported $1.547 trillion in exports and $2.335 trillion in imports, for a deficit of $788 billion.

The Commerce Ministry's statement last week said a WTO global trade report due out this month or in early March would recalculate those figures and should show China still No. 2.

Also, some commentators have questioned whether China's trade data can be trusted because many companies are believed to misreport imports and exports to avoid taxes or get trade-related payments.

"Of course, it is only a matter of time before China becomes No. 1," said Ren.

Behind the headline numbers, China and the United States are drastically different traders.

China is the world's low-cost factory, assembling most of its mobile phones, home appliances and other goods. But its factories need imported technology and components. Much of the value of its exports flows to U.S. and European technology suppliers and to producers of components in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Southeast Asia.

That has meant surpluses Asian countries used to run with the United States were shifted to China's column in U.S. national accounts.

By contrast, the United States uses its own technology and adds more value to goods such as jetliners and factory machinery. So it keeps a bigger share of the value of its exports.

American workers also are far more productive. A trade group, the National Association of Manufacturers, says U.S. factories produce goods worth more than China's manufacturing output with about one-tenth as many workers.

Over the past decade, China passed the United States as the biggest market for autos and mobile phones and became the biggest producer of steel and ships. It overtook Japan in 2009 as the second-largest economy.

China also racked up firsts in more contentious areas as the biggest energy consumer and producer of climate-changing greenhouse gases. Beijing initially denied both changes, possibly out of concern they would add pressure for environment controls it feared might hamper economic growth.

As a developing country, China was exempt from emissions limits under the Kyoto Protocol aimed at curbing climate change. Some Western companies complained that gave its manufacturers an unfair price advantage.

The huge volume of China's imports makes it a driver of growth for suppliers of goods from iron ore to computer chips, which is starting to translate into political influence.

Even with growth slower than its double-digit rates of the past decade, China's share of world output and trade is expected to keep rising. Annual growth is forecast at up to 8 percent over the next decade, far above U.S. and European levels.

Chinese leaders are trying to nurture more self-sustaining economic growth based on domestic consumption instead of exports. That might slow demand growth for some raw materials, but China's appetite for other imports could pick up as consumer spending rises.

The website reported that on January 10 of this year, Prospect Park Networks, LLC reported a?$25 million investment filing with?the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. One clue that points to the deal being related to ABRY Partners is that in addition to Jeff Kwatinetz and Richard Frank (co-founders of Prospect Park) being named in the filing, Brent Stone of ABRY Partners is also listed.

Windstar buys three Seabourn ships - Travel Weekly

Windstar buys three Seabourn ships

Three smaller Seabourn ships are being sold to the parent company of tall ship line Windstar.

The luxury 104-suite Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend will join the Windstar fleet from April 2014.

With a capacity of 208 passengers each, the trio of vessels will complement Windstar's Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf, bringing the total Windstar fleet to six ships and 1,230 berths.

The delivery of the three all-suite ships will take place over the next two years in the Mediterranean.

Seabourn Pride will be the first ship to enter the Windstar fleet to begin operating in May 2014 following a month-long renovation. The cruises are due to go on sale in May.

Windstar will take possession of Seabourn Legend in April 2015 and Seabourn Spirit in May of the same year.

The deal has been struck between Windstar owner Xanterra and Seabourn parent Carnival Corporation to purchase the three ships. No price was given.

Xanterra president and chief executive Andrew Todd said:"Windstar Cruises has experienced four straight years of revenue growth.

?This expansion is the perfect way to build on the momentum following our recent fleet-wide renovation, providing us with the much-needed capacity to match the accelerating demand for our intimate style of yacht cruising," continued Todd.

"Windstar has built a great reputation, offering distinctive intimate, yacht-style cruising.

?This style is at the core of our guest experience and these ships will be a great addition to our brand."

The fleet expansion will provide Windstar access to new destinations such as Asia and South America, in addition to the 50 countries the company already sails to.

Windstar recently announced a return to Tahiti in May 2014, one of the top destinations requested by Windstar passengers and travel agents.

Windstar's shore-side operations will continue to run out of the company's Seattle headquarters. Additional details, including itineraries, onboard experiences and renovation details will be released in the coming months.

Seabourn is poised to order a new ship as it seeks to maintain capacity following the sale of its three smallest vessels.

The company said there would be no disruption in service or changes in operations on any currently published voyages.

President Richard Meadows said: ?Seabourn remains dedicated to our mission of creating the world?s finest travel experiences through our small-ship cruising product.

?Our three newest vessels, Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn, and Seabourn Quest have raised the bar for ultra-luxury cruising and we intend to add a fourth ship of similar design.

?Seabourn is already in discussion with shipbuilders and an order is likely to be announced within the current fiscal year. The new ship will allow Seabourn to maintain much of its current guest capacity.?

Chimps in Uganda: Conservation Conversation

Greetings are very important in Ugandan culture. Where we work, it is customary to greet those you encounter with a standard exchange in Runyoro, the local language here. For example, if we find a farmer working in his garden in the morning, we might initiate the following conversation:

?Thank you for your work.?

?Thank you for your work also. You are welcome here.?

?How was the night??

?The night was fine.?

?What is the news??

?No news.? (Note: It is important to respond in this way even if you do have very big news. You will go on to share that news later in the conversation, but for now, this is the standard reply.)

?How is this place??

?This place is fine.?

This typically marks the end of pleasantries as well as the end of Jack?s and my conversational repertoire in Runyoro. From there, field assistant Nick continues the conversation by chatting with people and finding out whether they?ve seen or heard chimpanzees recently.

So began an unusual conversation a few days ago. In our unending quest to find evidence of chimpanzees, we turned onto a dirt trail that runs parallel to a surprisingly intact strip of riparian forest. A farm borders the forest strip, and our path led us to the home of the farmers who own that land. There we found an old man, a young man in his late teens, and several small children. Nick made some initial inquiries in Runyoro, and the young man, named John Mary, began to speak in an animated way. He switched to English and explained that this patch of forest belongs to his family. Nick implored him not to cut their trees. He replied that, ah no, they were cutting trees here some years back, but a couple of NGOs came to educate their family about the importance of protecting natural forests. They stopped cutting and hope to plant more natural trees there in the near future. He said that it is difficult to convince others to do the same.

We shifted our gazes across the river, where people were busy cutting down trees for timber and to make way for crop fields. He said that the older landowners around here rent out their land for farming, and that as long as they receive their rent money they don?t mind what people do with the land. He expressed frustration that they don?t think about the impact of forest cutting on their children and grandchildren. They only want to get the money to fill their bellies now, because soon they will die and then they cannot eat, he said with a laugh.

The topic shifted to where he heard the chimps vocalizing that morning. We thanked the family and said our goodbyes, continuing along the path in the direction where he heard them. His words echoed in my mind as we went on our way. He is a great example of the power of education programs. His family stopped logging and is committed to the notion of forest conservation. All this talk of forests wasn?t mere rhetoric for our benefit. The evidence is easy to see?it?s leafy, green and, still standing tall in remarkable abundance.

John Mary will leave his farm soon to resume his schooling in town. In the coming years, he will continue to fight an uphill battle to protect his family?s bit of forest. From impoverished local individuals to large multinational corporations, many have a stake in what happens to community-owned forests like these. Because of conservation organizations and people like John Mary, however, the value of natural forests to the livelihood of chimpanzees, humans, and entire ecosystems cannot be ignored.

Dean Health Plan to add 30 to 50 jobs in Madison

Dean Health Plan said Monday it will add 30 to 50 jobs at its Madison headquarters through an administrative contract with Milwaukee-based Children's Community Health Plan.

The three-year contract to process claims and provide customer service for CCHP's BadgerCare members is part of an effort to expand beyond Dean's primary 20-county region, Lon Sprecher, CEO of Dean Health Plan, said in a statement.

Last year, Dean signed an agreement with Prevea Health and St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay to sell Dean insurance in Brown County.

That added about 20 jobs in Madison, where Dean Health Plan employs about 570 people, said spokesman Pete Thompson.

The developments in the Milwaukee and Green Bay areas will boost Dean's membership to more than 400,000 people by June, Thompson said.

Apple releases two new iPad ads, ?Alive? and ?Together?

After the lulzy Microsoft Surface Pro ad, Apple has now released two new ads for its own tablets, the iPad and iPad mini.

Called ?Alive? and ?Together?, the two ads once again concentrate on people using their iPads to get things done, with the focus primarily being on the incredible range of third party tablet apps that the iPad has. Both ads quickly run through various type of apps, such as music creation apps, medical apps, education apps, entertainment apps and games, among others.

Although not quite the best ads we?ve seen from Apple in a while, they still get the point across fairly well rather than showing you people randomly breaking into a dance for no apparent reason.

Jazz notes: Jefferson helps out after tornado

Jazz notes ? Damaged Hattiesburg, Miss., near Big Al?s hometown.

Houston ? Al Jefferson didn?t have big plans for All-Star Weekend. He was going home to southern Mississippi and would see people he wanted to see.

Then a tornado struck nearby Hattiesburg. On Saturday, the Jazz center spent his time with people he hadn?t even known.

In a video report published online by WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Jefferson could be seen visiting families in areas hit hardest by the tornado, which reportedly destroyed or damaged 800 homes.

Jefferson grew up in Prentiss, a small town 55 miles from Hattiesburg, a college city of 50,000 people. While no one was killed by the storm, it gutted sections of Hattiesburg.

"It took my breath away," Jefferson told the news station. "I?m still kind of amazed just to see all of the damage that was done."

So, like Jefferson does when his team?s offense has begun to lag, he decided to do something about it. WDAM reported Jefferson pledged to buy a new car for a teenage girl whose vehicle was destroyed by the tornado.

"It feels good, man," Jefferson said. "It feels real good, especially when you?re able to do it. This time, everybody needs to come together and stick together and help each other out."

Jefferson who makes $15 million this season in the final year of his contract with the Jazz, also hosts an offseason basketball camp for children and funded a scholarship endowment in honor of his late father.

"If I can just help someone get through this," he said, "it makes me feel better and like I did my part."

story continues below

Rumors

The Jazz were rumored Saturday to be in talks with the Los Angeles Clippers about a deal that would bring Eric Bledsoe to Utah while shipping free agent-to-be Paul Millsap to Southern California.

The potential trade was reported by ESPN.com.

Bledsoe would provide the point guard of the future the Jazz are seeking, and Millsap would give the Clippers front court depth for their playoff run. However, Millsap makes more than $5 million more than Bledsoe, meaning the Clippers would have to include other pieces to make the salaries match. Things would get tricky at that point for the Jazz, who would need to find a way to open roster spots. They currently carry 15 players under contract, which is the league maximum.

The voters back home

Jeremy Evans didn?t win the Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday at the Toyota Center, falling to Toronto?s Terrence Ross in a popular vote.

Evans jumped over a portrait of himself dunking that he painted in the week and a half before the contest, and then over a seated Dahntay Jones for his final performance. However, Evans garnered only 42 percent of the vote.

While not all of the viewers favored Evans, his teammates certainly did. Enes Kanter, Millsap, Gordon Hayward, DeMarre Carroll, Kevin Murphy, Jamaal Tinsley and Derrick Favors all tweeted their support for Evans. After the result was announced, Carroll was the most vocal dissenter.

"Are you serious???" he wrote on the social networking site. "I thought the dunk contest was about bein CREATIVE."

Sony trims price of PlayStation Vita, adds new color

In Japan, gamers can now choose from silver, white, black, red, and blue PS Vitas.

(Credit: Sony Computer Entertainment Japan)

With a little less than 48 hours to go before the world gets a glimpse at the PlayStation 4, there's some news for the PS Vita coming out of Japan today.

Sony announced that the company lowered and equalized the price point for the Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi-versions of the PS Vita to 19,980 yen ($212) from 24,980 yen ($265) and 29,980 yen ($319), respectively. Sony didn't carry the announcement over to the U.S., but it's possible that the company may use a portion of its PlayStation event in New York on February 20 to announce a similar price cut.

Naturally, those prices depend on currency conversions and don't represent the effect of a Vita price cut in the States, which could see prices for the handheld fall to $199 or less.

In related news, Sony introduced a new color, Ice Silver, for the PS Vita. The Wi-Fi-only gaming device features the same innards as a regular Vita and hits Japan on February 28.

These announcements came way by a video feed shown to Japanese consumers today. The video contained many previews for upcoming Vita titles, including highly-anticipated role-playing games such as Valhalla Knights 3, Eiyuu Densetsu: Sen no Kiseki, Dragon's Crown, and several others.

This long-awaited preview of Final Fantasy X HD for Vita generated a lot of buzz:

Marco Rubio Slams Obama's Immigration Reform - Business Insider

AP

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) slammed leaked legislation that served as the first draft of President Barack Obama's immigration reform plan, saying it would be "dead on arrival" in Congress.

On Saturday, USA Today?obtained the draft of Obama's proposal, which would provide a path for all illegal immigrants to become permanent residents in eight years. Rubio criticized the President's plan for a lack of emphasis on border security, saying in a statement that "does nothing to address guest workers or future flow, which serious immigration experts agree is critical to preventing future influxes of illegal immigrants."

"It?s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress," Rubio said. "President Obama?s leaked immigration proposal is disappointing to those of us working on a serious solution. The President?s bill repeats the failures of past legislation."

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough pushed back on Rubio's criticism Sunday on ABC's "This Week," saying it was up to Congress to come up with something other than Obama's plan.

"He says its ?dead on arrival? if it?s?proposed," McDonough said of Rubio. "Well, let?s make sure that it doesn?t have to be proposed. ?Let?s make sure that that group up there, the 'gang of eight,' makes the good progress on these efforts as much as they say they want to."

Appearing after McDonough on "This Week," Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) also said that the White House leaking the proposal "sets things in the wrong direction."

"Look, the question that we always have to ask ourselves, particularly with this White House, is the president looking for a partisan advantage or is he looking for a bipartisan law?" Ryan said.

"And by putting these details out without a guest worker program, without addressing future flow, by giving advantage to those who cut in front of line for immigrants who came here legally, not dealing with border security adequately, that tells us that he's looking for a partisan advantage and not a bipartisan solution."

Florida beer battle brewing

TALLAHASSEE

Among all the high-minded legislative debate this year over education funding, whether to expand health care coverage to more people and reforming the voting system, state lawmakers will also be debating growlers.

For the uninitiated, this is a turf war over the size of beer containers. A growler is a reusable bottle filled at the tap.

A bill would legalize 64-ounce beer growlers in Florida. (AP photo)

A bill would legalize 64-ounce beer growlers in Florida. (AP photo)

Although Tallahassee is run by the Republicans ? who espouse less regulation and more free markets ? one of the dirty secrets is that businesses and other special interest groups often use the legislative process and the state bureaucracy to literally box ? or bottle ? out their competitors.

Craft beer advocates are behind bill HB 715, filed by Rep. Katie Edwards, D-Plantation, that would allow breweries to sell 64-ounce growlers, the standard size in the rest of the country. State law currently allows only 32-ounce and 128-ounce growlers, which allow beer drinkers to take home beer that isn?t sold in regular bottles or cans.

It is reminiscent of a battle waged a dozen years ago by state Sen. Tom Lee, R-Brandon, and former state Rep. David Bitner, R-Port Charlotte, who finally got a bill passed that upended a 36-year-old law restricting beer bottles to 8, 12, 16 and 32 ounces.

You might wonder why that 1965 law was passed. It was aimed at handcuffing Miller Brewing, which at the time was selling a popular 7-ounce ?pony? bottle.

The growler war will be fought by the craft beer lobbyists, who argue that allowing the popular half-gallon containers will help the young industry flourish in the state.

But they will face opposition from the beer distributors, who want to keep the current system, which is quite lucrative for them, intact.

The growler opponents will cloak their argument in health and safety concerns ? likely finding allies in groups that see larger containers leading to more alcohol consumption.

The bill is solely aimed at legalizing 64-ounce growlers, and would not resolve confusion over who can sell them, according to Ryan Terrell, a legislative aide to Edwards.

?We?re just attempting to deal with the size issue,? Terrell said. ?That?s where the economic development will come into place.? Current law seems to limit growler sales to breweries, while other states allow sales at brewpubs and even gas stations.

Past Democratic attempts to legalize 64-ounce growlers have failed, but this year Rep. Dana Young, R-Tampa, has signed on as a co-sponsor. Young?s district includes several up-and-coming craft breweries like Cigar City, which is using social media to promote the legislation.

The growler bill isn?t the only ?size matters? battle facing lawmakers.

Sen. Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, has a measure (SB 658) that would allow manufacturers and distributors to sell wine canisters up to six gallons in size to restaurants and bars. Current law restricts the size to a gallon and proponents say lifting the restriction will allow the hospitality industry to offer more high-end wines by the glass ? since the canisters keep the wine fresher than bottles.

Simpson said his bill is lifting a Prohibition-era regulation and would help wine manufacturers in Florida, including one in his district.

?This legislation would simply remove antiquated red tape that arbitrarily limits wine container sizes in Florida,? Simpson said in a statement. ?By updating these statutes, which were written just after the Prohibition Era, the Legislature would effectively allow Florida?s hospitality industry to proceed with custom tailored wine by the glass programs through innovative new methods and with technology manufactured within my district.?

Some 36 states now allow the canisters, said Rep. Frank Artiles, R-Miami, who is sponsoring the House version of the bill (HB 623).

Texas and Pennsylvania were the latest states to lift the restriction.

WINNER OF THE WEEK: Florida Republicans. Former state GOP chairman Jim Greer?s guilty plea avoided a trial that could have cast a glare of publicity on the unsavory inner workings of the state party during his tenure and embarrassed a number of Republican leaders. Former Gov. Charlie Crist, who is a now a Democrat, may have also benefited in that his role in Greer?s rise and fall would have been part of the trial.

LOSER OF THE WEEK: Florida Democrats. Party operatives were hoping Greer?s trial would have tarnished the GOP brand heading into the next major election cycle in 2014. Now the Republicans can put the scandal behind them as both parties focus on the upcoming governor?s race, Cabinet and legislative contests.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: ?Guilty, your honor,? former state Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer told a judge, pleading to charges of grand theft and money laundering related to a fund-raising company he created while he was the head of the state party.

Herald-Tribune Staff Writer Alan Shaw contributed to this report.

Generating more web traffic

Hello all.

I am currently managing a business that is trying to do more online business and although it has been running for over a year now (the online part that is)it doesn't seem to generate as many sales that I had hoped for. I spend about ?200 on SEO per month and have a deal with BT to provide Adwords at about ?200 per month, any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Mr Grumpy.

Talk to Old Welsh Guy or any number of other specialists, and put your time and money into what they advise.

For PPC...?200 might not get you very far especially if you are in a competitive market..

BT pahhh... ;-)

Thanks for the info.

I do use a professional web company for the SEO. I have been disappointed with BT it sends people to a landing page first and although they can tell me how many visitors to the landing page they can't tell me how many people click to my actual site.

Last time I audited a PPC campaign set up by BT, they weren't geotargeting the searches, for a local business with a 20 mile radius.

The result? A conservatory installer in the Scottish Highlands was getting PPC clicks from people from Southampton to Cardiff.

Perhaps they've improved, but surely a quick review couldn't hurt.

Depending on your business and target market, Facebook ads might work, Bing advertising, or many other possible traffic sources. A bit more info might clarify.

I am happy to sell anywhere in England/Scotland.

For the money I am spending how many visitors should I be getting to my site?

Do I need to spend more on SEO and Adwords. I have been told that whatever I put into Adwords I should be getting out in orders, but that is not the case.

Thanks

If your Adwords isn't generating sales, then you don't need to spend more.

Sometimes problems with Adwords leading to sales include:
- poor ad copy that attracts people for the wrong reasons
- running the wrong times of day, days of week or locations
- landing page where visitors arrive on site is poor quality, prices are too high, or other turn-off

Adwords test campaigns need to be profitable before thinking about ramping up!!

You really need to track your conversion and hence ROI. You need to get to grips with your analytics before making marketing investment decisions.
