So You Want to Join the Hunt for E.T.

November 29, 2012 9:30 AM Text Size: A . A . A Through a radio telescope, a signal from an alien civilization would probably look a lot like a signal from a satellite orbiting Earth, only fainter. At least that's what scientists engaged in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) suspect.

After a brief shutdown for budgetary reasons, the SETI Institute is using California's 42-dish Allen Telescope Array to investigate the 2321 exoplanets turned up by NASA's Kepler space-based observatory, which is searching for Earth-like planets.

Jill Tarter, the Bernard M. Oliver chair at the SETI Institute?and the model for Jodie Foster's character in Contact?says the most promising window for signals is from 1 GHz to 10 GHz. Unfortunately, that range is noisy with everything from GPS satellite signals to Wi-Fi communications. And computer algorithms can only do so much.

Since February 2012, SETILive has been receiving help from volunteers who review the data online, categorizing white lines that appear against a background of radio static that looks eerily like a starry sky. Depending on which frequencies the array is searching, as many as half the views or as few as one in 10 will show some kind of line. After watching for several hours, I saw live signals only once, but you can also examine archived data. Assessments that a signal might be E.T. send the telescope back for a second (and even a third) look at about 10 percent of the signals.

SETILive is the fruition of Tarter's 2009 TED Prize wish: "to empower earthlings everywhere to become active participants in the ultimate search for cosmic company." If that sounds like a message destined to attract people wearing tinfoil hats, Tarter is unconcerned. Even if all that's found are GPS satellite signals, she believes the search itself has value. It "holds up a mirror to humanity," she says. "We are all earthlings. That perspective may help trivialize the differences that we all struggle with today."

To volunteer online: setilive .org.

SETILive volunteers categorize the signals they see online. The angle of the image is important; it can help indicate whether a transmission comes from an object in orbit or from deep space. This is the erratic signal from a wobbly satellite. The SETI Institute needs human observers to help screen out near-Earth signals such as this. A "broken" or pulsed pattern normally indicates ground-based radio interference.

Taiwan body to reopen DRAM asset tender after failed auction

TAIPEI (Reuters) - A tender for Taiwanese chip maker ProMOS Technologies Inc's idled fabrication plant will be reopened next month after the deadline for an initial sale attempt passed without bids, a semi-government body said, as interest from foreign firms raised hopes a deal could be done.

The tender for the 12-inch wafer fab at ProMOS, which like Taiwan's other small producers of DRAM memory chips has been hit hard by falling prices and high capital spending costs, received no bid documents by Thursday's deadline, the Taiwan Financial Asset Service Corp (TFASC) said.

The semi-governmental body, which was in charge of the auction on behalf of the creditors, said the T$19.5 billion ($660 million) base price for the assets will not be changed when the tender reopens on December 12.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, United Microelectronics Corp and Global Foundries, owned by an Abu Dhabi state fund, had been interested in buying the assets, sources close to the situation have said.

The creditors are hoping that, when the bid reopens in two weeks, two foreign companies that had visited the 12-inch wafer plant will have had sufficient time to prepare bidding documents, Lu Dong-ying, who was speaking on behalf of creditors, told reporters on Thursday. Lu declined to name the two companies.

ProMOS, which delisted its shares from the Taipei stock exchange in March, has $1.9 billion in debt and halted production last year.

Many producers of DRAM chips, a market dominated globally by South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and SK Hynix Inc, are struggling as falling prices and huge investments to stay competitive saddle them with massive losses.

Demand for personal computers, the primary user of DRAM chips, has also been hammered as consumers switch to smartphones and tablets.

Several DRAM producers have been forced to seek financial help or tie-ups that would boost scale, or have moved into higher-value semiconductors.

The chief executive of Micron Technology Inc, which is losing money, said he expected to complete the acquisition of failed Japanese memory chipmaker Elpida Memory Inc in the first half of next year.

Girls basketball: City High beats Washington on boards

CEDAR RAPIDS ? Haley Lorenzen is ?a different player? this season, according to Bill McTaggart.

?She?s stronger,? said the Iowa City High girls? basketball coach. ?And her footwork is so much better.?

Rebounding, though ? she could always rebound.

Lorenzen spearheaded the Little Hawks? superior boardwork in an 82-67 Mississippi Valley Conference win over Cedar Rapids Washington on Tuesday at Washington High School.

Class 5A third-ranked City High outrebounded the Warriors, 53-29, and improved to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the MVC.

?It?s something we work on a lot in practice,? said Lorenzen, a 6-foot-3 junior who is getting looks from some high Division-I programs. ?We focus on boxing out and crashing. And we do have some size.?

Lorenzen posted 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Little Hawks claimed the victory in a physical contest. The teams combined for 47 fouls (30 by Washington).

Guards Kiera Washpun and Mickey Hansche added 17 and 16 points apiece.

?We?ve got a ways to go, but we can cause some matchup problems,? McTaggart said. ?We?ve got an inside game and an outside game.?

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Little Hawks claimed the lead in the second period and held control the rest of the way. It was 40-31 when Lorenzen picked up her third foul with 3:08 left in the half, but City played the Warriors (0-1, 0-1) even until intermission without her.

City High had been through two games while this was Washington?s opener.

?It might have made a difference,? Washington Coach Frank Howell said. ?After the first game or two, you have a little inventory on where you are.

?I thought we would rebound a little better than we did tonight. We need to go after the ball a little harder. There were times we had the ball ripped out of our hands.?

Lorenzen?s short left-handed hook gave the Little Hawks a 15-point lead through the third quarter, and the Warriors could get no closer than 10. Fouling at the end wasn?t much of an option; each of the four starters had four personals.

All-stater Dani Franklin had 18 points for Washington. So did Abby Herb.

City High hosts Cedar Rapids Xavier on Friday; Washington is at Dubuque Senior.

iTunes Connect, the portal iPhone, iPad, and Mac developers use to manage their apps on the App Store, will be shutting down between December 21 and December 28, 2012. For regular folks, that means no new apps will become available that week, no app updates will show up that week, and no price changes (i.e. sales or end of sales) will occur during that week.

Basically, Apple's review team has the week off.

For developers, here are the details:

iTunes Connect will be temporarily shut down from Friday, December 21, 2012 to Friday, December 28, 2012, for the winter holidays. During this shutdown, the following functionality will be unavailable:

  • Access to iTunes Connect
  • Delivery of any apps or updates

Additionally, the following will be delayed:

  • Releases scheduled to appear on the App Store for the first time
  • Pricing changes scheduled through the interval pricing system in iTunes Connect

We strongly recommend that you do not schedule any pricing changes in iTunes Connect that would take effect between Friday, December 21, 2012 and Friday, December 28, 2012. Pricing changes scheduled to take effect during this date range will not be reflected on the App Store and your app or In-App Purchase will become unavailable for purchase until after the shutdown.

We also recommend that you do not schedule any apps to go live during the shutdown. Releases scheduled with a start date between Friday, December 21, 2012 and Friday, December 28, 2012 will not go live on the App Store until after the shutdown.

Do missing Jupiters mean massive comet belts?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Using ESA's Herschel space observatory, astronomers have discovered vast comet belts surrounding two nearby planetary systems known to host only Earth-to-Neptune-mass worlds. The comet reservoirs could have delivered life-giving oceans to the innermost planets.

In a previous Herschel study, scientists found that the dusty belt surrounding nearby star Fomalhaut must be maintained by collisions between comets.

In the new Herschel study, two more nearby planetary systems -- GJ 581 and 61 Vir -- have been found to host vast amounts of cometary debris.

Herschel detected the signatures of cold dust at 200?C below freezing, in quantities that mean these systems must have at least 10 times more comets than in our own Solar System's Kuiper Belt.

GJ 581, or Gliese 581, is a low-mass M dwarf star, the most common type of star in the Galaxy. Earlier studies have shown that it hosts at least four planets, including one that resides in the 'Goldilocks Zone' -- the distance from the central sun where liquid surface water could exist.

Two planets are confirmed around G-type star 61 Vir, which is just a little less massive than our Sun.

The planets in both systems are known as 'super-Earths', covering a range of masses between 2 and 18 times that of Earth.

Interestingly, however, there is no evidence for giant Jupiter- or Saturn-mass planets in either system.

The gravitational interplay between Jupiter and Saturn in our own Solar System is thought to have been responsible for disrupting a once highly populated Kuiper Belt, sending a deluge of comets towards the inner planets in a cataclysmic event that lasted several million years.

"The new observations are giving us a clue: they're saying that in the Solar System we have giant planets and a relatively sparse Kuiper Belt, but systems with only low-mass planets often have much denser Kuiper belts," says Dr Mark Wyatt from the University of Cambridge, lead author of the paper focusing on the debris disc around 61 Vir.

"We think that may be because the absence of a Jupiter in the low-mass planet systems allows them to avoid a dramatic heavy bombardment event, and instead experience a gradual rain of comets over billions of years."

"For an older star like GJ 581, which is at least two billion years old, enough time has elapsed for such a gradual rain of comets to deliver a sizable amount of water to the innermost planets, which is of particular importance for the planet residing in the star's habitable zone," adds Dr Jean-Francois Lestrade of the Observatoire de Paris who led the work on GJ 581.

However, in order to produce the vast amount of dust seen by Herschel, collisions between the comets are needed, which could be triggered by a Neptune-sized planet residing close to the disc.

"Simulations show us that the known close-in planets in each of these systems cannot do the job, but a similarly-sized planet located much further from the star -- currently beyond the reach of current detection campaigns -- would be able to stir the disc to make it dusty and observable," says Dr Lestrade.

"Herschel is finding a correlation between the presence of massive debris discs and planetary systems with no Jupiter-class planets, which offers a clue to our understanding of how planetary systems form and evolve," says G?ran Pilbratt, ESA's Herschel project scientist.

Target holiday tour across Canada heralds planned store openings

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario ? Target will sponsor a tour across Canada that will visit more than 20 communities ahead of the planned opening of its stores in the country, the mass-merchandise retailer said Tuesday.

The tour will start in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and conclude in British Columbia in the middle of December. Target plans to open 124 stores in Canada starting in March and April 2013.

"We are excited to be celebrating the holidays with Canadians from coast to coast," Target Canada director of marketing Livia Zufferli said. "We've planned surprises in more than 20 communities across the country in the hopes of creating unforgettable memories and giving Canadians a taste of what they can expect when Target opens in 2013."

Target purchased the leases for the Zellers store chain from the Hudson's Bay Co. in January 2011. Since then, it has worked to convert the stores to Target stores and also boosted its presence in Canada. On Nov. 6, the company announced it would sponsor a competition for up-and-coming Canadian fashion designers, and last week, it announced it would donate up to $1 million to Canadian charities through its Give With Target program.

Communications : By Using Fax To Email Software Old Equipment Is ...

By Marilyn J. Roberts

There are so many technological advances that most people simply take for granted but anyone that stands back for a moment and contemplate the incredible speed with which things have changes cannot help but be astonished. It seems like yesterday when the facsimile was brand new technology. Many people still use them, but most people see it as obsolete. Luckily, fax to email technology allows computers and old fashioned facsimile machines to talk to each other.

This technology is possible because there are many similarities between the way in which old fashioned facsimile machines communicated with each other and the way in which modern computers do it. Facsimile machines basically consist of a printer, a modem that lets it contact another machine and a scanner that converted the images or text into electronic format.

The basic fax via internet technology has been developed to allow computer users with electronic mail accounts to send and receive documents from people and organizations that do not have the advantages of internet technology. It is not only possible to send a facsimile from a traditional machine to an email account, but also to send an email to a facsimile machine.

There are other uses for the technology as well. Many internet users want to communicate written material, diagrams, plans and other hard copy to other computer users. In such cases it is really easy to simply use an internet to internet facsimile service. It is even possible to transmit from an internet facsimile account to an electronic mail account.

There are many online services that offer software that will allow anybody with internet access the use of fax through email technology. In most cases basic versions of the software can be downloaded free of charge. The new client will be allocated a free telephone number and any owner of an old facsimile machine can use that number to transmit material to the electronic mail account of the internet user.

There are many people that simply cannot imagine any other people without access to the internet. Yet there are millions of people and businesses in remote and poor areas of the world that have no choice other than to rely on old technology. For such people the ability to send a variety of documents with an ordinary facsimile machine to a computer user using online faxing software is heaven sent.

There can be little doubt that fax to email technology has done much to increase the efficiency with which people with different technological means can communicate with each other. It is an unfortunate fact that not everybody is able to keep up with the latest software, equipment and tools. For such people this technology is often a life saver.

Moody's eyeing progress of sin tax bill in PHL Congress | Economy ...

Global debt watcher Moody?s Investors Service is keeping an eye on the sin tax measure now pending in the Philippine Congress where it is up for discussions at the bicameral conference committee level.
?
Moving forward, what Moody?s wants to see ? in particular ? is how the legislated sin tax measure would impact on and sustain the government?s fiscal needs, said Christian de Guzman, Moody?s lead analyst for the Philippines, in response to an e-mailed query by reporters in Manila. ?
?
The measure seeks to increase taxes on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages over five years.
?
?We would see the actual passage of the bill as positive as it would help to increase the government?s revenues,? Singapore-based De Guzman noted.
?
?Relative to other countries with similar ratings, the Philippine government?s revenues are far lower and thus have an adverse impact on key ratios of fiscal sustainability that we monitor,? he added.
?
Last month, Moody?s upgraded its ratings on Philippine foreign and local currency long-term bonds to a notch below investment grade (Ba1 from Ba2), which confirmed the earlier ratings given by Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor?s.
?
?I think it?s also important to note that the dimensions of the sin tax bill post-bicameral conference are as yet unclear,? said De Guzman.
?
Because the additional revenues will fund healthcare spending, the actual passage of the bill would have neutral impact on the deficit, according to Moody?s.
?
Still, the measure?s actual passage into law bodes well for the government?s efforts to improve revenues, according to the analyst.
?
Such development reflects a concrete example of the 15th Congress actually enacting a new legislation in aid of government?s finances, De Guzman added.
?
?The 15th Congress had not achieved any significant developments with regards to revenue previously, while the 14th Congress was characterized by the passage of several revenue eroding measures,? he noted.
?
The bicameral conference committee will reconcile both versions of the Sin Tax Reform Bill approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Houser version seeks additional revenues of P31.5 billion in the first year of implementation and the Senate version is eyeing to raise P40 billion more in the same period. ? VS, GMA News

spicy icecream: Sweethearts Rooftop BBQ, Kings Cross

sweethearts rooftop bbq
In one of my recent posts I mentioned one new venue that we opened recently, but we actually have another new baby - yes, that's right, we opened two new venues within two weeks of each other (phew)! Sweethearts BBQ is located on the rooftop of the Sugarmill building in Kings Cross, which also houses Kit & Kaboodle nightclub... and I like it so much that I've been back 5 times in the last 4 weeks!

Think sunshine (although there's a retractable roof too for when it rains), beers, ciders, cocktail pitchers and shandies. Did your aunties drink shandies too? The food is fresh as can be, and perhaps a little fancier than your regular family BBQ - definitely no burnt snags here! I think this will turn into the perfect place to spend summer evenings and catch up with friends over a few drinks and delicious food to share. I love the super relaxed vibe and tick box menus.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
In the name of research, we tried all the cocktail pitchers and I would be hard pressed to pick a favourite.?The Hills Hoist above is definitely a crowd pleaser and perfect for sharing with the girls containing watermelon, apple, lemon, mint, gin and soda. But I also really liked the Mango Tree that mixed up mango liqueur, pineapple, rum, ginger ale and lemon. The tap cider (James Squire I believe) is also great, and they also offer a Spiked Cider Slushie that might just become my drink of the summer.

Onto the food!?We started with some barbecued turkish and olive bread (similar to how my Dad does it for our family BBQ's) and the thickest, fluffiest chips with a homemade tomato sauce that I think had a hint of Dijon mustard in it. I love when the potato skins are left on chips, so of course these were a favourite. I recommend adding Truffle Salt for $1 extra.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
After that, the starters started coming out fast. I was looking forward to trying the soy-braised brisket and beetroot burgers, although I was expecting it to be a full size sandwich. However mini size was probably for the best considering how much food there was!?As a general rule, I will love anything containing brisket, and these were no exception - the tender beef was delicious with the beetroot relish.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
Sweethearts potato salad was a blast from the past, with bits of crispy bacon and sweet corn kernels, it reminded me of family BBQ's when I was younger. Not to mention that it was served on a plate that looks like something my Nanna would own! I liked the little bit of heat that the green chillies brought to this version.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
A surprise favourite of mine also from the 'Rabbit Food' category was the Grilled Watermelon with feta, mint and pita chips. A sort of unusual combination to be sure, but wow, it works so well and is definitely a must order when you visit!

sweethearts rooftop bbq
The Grilled Prawns are a tribute to Paul Hogan's shrimp on the barbie, cooked in butter and loads of garlic. A great dish to share with your mates over a few beers.

I don't have any photos of them but a recent favourite dish has been the Skewers. On offer are chicken, beef, pork, salmon belly and veggie with your choice of condiment, so there are endless combinations for deliciousness. I love the chilli caramel with the pork, the chimmichurri with the chicken, and the truffle salt with the salmon.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
Another standout was the Glazed Pork Belly. Just look at that crispy skin! It was beautifully cooked and served with a salad of sweet and sour slaw, chilli, pear and sesame. Suze, this one's for you!

sweethearts rooftop bbq
Promise me you'll try the ribs when you visit. It's a little more unusual to see lamb ribs on a restaurant menu, but when they're done perfectly like this, it's a welcome surprise. I've never seen ribs that fall off the bones like these do, and the honey, chilli, coriander and lime sauce is absolutely delicious.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
As stuffed as I was, I couldn't rightly turn down bone marrow butter now, could I? I've wanted to try this since I was designing the menus! We requested our Black Angus Sirloin very rare and it was served perfectly pink. Once the butter started to melt into the meat, it was absolutely incredible. I also liked the selection of mustards that accompanied it, but who are we kidding, it was all about the butter.

sweethearts rooftop bbq
What's an Aussie BBQ without the classic Aussie dessert - pavlova! Sweethearts' version is a Smashed Pav with summer berries and cream with flecks of vanilla bean throughout and it's absolutely freaking delicious. Also on the dessert menu is a delicious grilled pineapple with coconut sorbet, and a selection of house made choc tops and cornetto ice creams!

I have to say it's very interesting being involved in the early stages of opening a venue, from the first mood boards to menu designs to finally seeing it all come together and open. I loved the food, the decor, the lovely staff, the casual atmosphere, touches of nostalgia coming through in the retro coasters and plates, and even the old school hip hop music playing. I think this will definitely become one of my regular haunts over the summer months!

Combining Social Media And Product Creation - How To Do This ...

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 at 7:50 am ?

It is pretty incredible how much of a difference building your own business can have, of course you have to think about certain factors.

Would you like to make a product in a specific niche? We are going to help you do this with this article. If you are willing to work hard, you can easily get these done and make a killing off of them. If you have the opportunity to do so, you need to take advantage of it. As an affiliate, you will get access to millions of different products that you can sell. Millions of niches exist including sub niches and micro-niches that you can gain access to. The following ideas are just for one class or category of people ? professional workers.

As for strategy that we will discuss has to do with drilling down into a niche to find profitable aspects of this particular market. Your primary focus is on newbies, beginners in any particular niche. When using this strategy, you want to find and market to these newbies. A lot of times the real experts and pros do not want to be bothered with people who are brand new to the niche. As long as you can spend some time with these people, and be patient with them, you can help them move in the right direction. You can change it up by creating your own products, or marketing affiliate products to these newbies regardless of the niche they are in.

Perhaps you have heard of LinkedIn? It is one of the largest networking sites. As long as you are not too aggressive, you can market your products on their website. You want to look for a professional niche where you can offer information (like the mega-list products we discussed before) to this market.

The title of your book might be ?153 Ways to Impress at an Interview ? ? this would be targeted toward young adults looking to land a job or start a new career. You might spend too much time on just one concept as there are so many ways to look at possible products. It is important that you build a Facebook page once you are done and keep moving on.

One of the most powerful emotions is fear, so the desire to alleviate that fear and avoid danger also becomes powerful. As you develop your product, it is important that you create it with these dangers in mind. When you do this, you can show people how to avoid danger and minimize their fear. Many niches can be addressed, especially with a theme and topic that is so broad and all-encompassing. Once you have done your research on the subject, and the market itself, you can create an info product that will sell well. You can also create a physical product like a DVD series which also works. Instead, think of all of the different marketing methods you can test out. Anything and everything you decide will be fine even if you don?t do anything; like with everything else, it?s up to you. But do think about diversity in terms of your marketing efforts and how it could save your business if your luck were to change.

Bomb hits Pakistani Shiite procession, kills 5

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? A bombing claimed by the Taliban killed at least five people and wounded some 90 others at a Shiite religious procession in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, police said, as the minority Muslim sect observes the annual Ashoura holiday.

At least 30 have now died in five attacks on Shiites claimed by the Pakistani Taliban over the past five days, while about 100 were wounded in the run up to the holiday, which commemorates the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The schism between Sunni and Shiite Muslims dates back to that time.

Sunday's explosion went off as hundreds of Shiites were passing through the main intersection of the city of Dera Ismail Khan, area police official Abdul Sattar said. An initial investigation suggested a bomb was planted near a shop along the procession route, he added.

Several of injured are in serious condition, said local hospital official Dr. Faridullah Mahsud, adding that three members of a paramilitary unit providing security were among the injured. Mahsud confirmed the five deaths.

The Pakistani Taliban, a Sunni extremist group, frequently attacks Shiites, who they consider heretics. Ashoura ceremonies are a prime targets, since they draw large crowds that march in processions to mourn the martyred Imam Hussein.

Qais Abbas, a Shiite survivor, said the procession was in the Chogla intersection of the city when the bomb went off. One of his relatives was in critical condition, he said, but he and others were moving the wounded to other hospitals that were better equipped.

"Here we are not getting proper care for them, there are not enough doctors or medicines," he said.

The same city was hit by a similar bombing on Saturday, which killed seven and injured 30. On Wednesday night, a Taliban suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near Islamabad, killing 17 people. Also Wednesday, the Taliban set off two bombs outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person and wounding 15 others. Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for all the attacks, with spokesman Ehasanullah Ehsan saying by telephone that the group will not relent and "looks forward to more ahead."

Authorities have deployed thousands of additional police across the country to beef up security for the holy day. Mobile phone service has been shut down in all the major cities to prevent such bombings, which officials say often use cellular phones as remote detonators.

Retro toys are hot this holiday season

toysrus.com

Remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? They're back, and retailers are betting they'll be big this holiday season.

By Martha C. White

Nostalgia sells.?

At least that's what toy manufacturers and retailers are hoping this holiday season. Former Generation Y hit toys like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and Furby are surging in popularity this year, contrary to the assumption that all kids care about today are toys with screens.

On Monday, the Toy Industry Association released its nominees for its 2013 Toy of the Year Awards. In the running for ?e-connected toy of the year? is Hasbro?s Furby, a robotic critter that first debuted nine years before the iPhone was invented. This year?s iteration has an iOS app.

toysrus.com

Hasbro's Furby, a robotic critter that first debuted nine years before the iPhone was invented, is on top toy lists this holiday season.

Furby also landed on both the girls? and?boys? lists in the National Retail Federation?s 2012 Top Toys survey at number three and number nine, respectively.

Slideshow: Hot holiday toys for 2012

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles make multiple appearances on the Toy Industry Association?s list, nominated in the categories of top toy for boys and most successful brand growth for the year.

Experts say there are a few reasons why these blasts from the past are suddenly hot again.

Retro toys ?tend to be more popular in times of economic difficulty,? said Gerrick Johnson, equity research analyst at BMO Capital Markets. ?On both the supply and demand side, they?re safe,? he said. ?You know it worked for one generation of kids.?

Parents with tight holiday shopping budgets might gravitate toward toys they remember enjoying a generation earlier. ?This year?s top toys... have some staying power, meaning children won?t get bored with them within a few weeks,? NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a statement.

Toys typically resurface in 20- to 25-year cycles, Johnson said. Companies calculate that adults who see familiar characters or games on store shelves will be in the right age range to have kids that can discover them for the first time.

?There?s no doubt that shelf recognition helps,? said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president of industry analysis for the NPD Group. ?It?s equally a familiarity factor."

And although parents remember them, old-school toys are new and exciting for today?s kids, said Toy Industry Association trend specialist Adrienne Appell. ?Sometimes the nostalgia and the back-to-basics factor is a 'wow' factor for the kids because they?re so used to the technology,? she said. ?It?s what parents are comfortable with.?

They?re also cheaper to produce. ?A lot of these toy companies that bring back retro toys, it?ll be less expensive for them to do so,? Johnson said, because the R&D investment has already been made.

Although brands are counting on the nostalgia of Gen Y parents to fuel demand, they?re not relying on it entirely. Earlier this year, Nickelodeon released a new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" television series.?The Power Ranger franchise is reintroducing many of its classic characters in a new season on Nickelodeon timed to coincide with its 20th anniversary early next year. In a release last month, owner Saban Brands said the launch would be supported by ?a robust global consumer products campaign, character appearances, retail promotions and advertising.?

Classic toys are filling a vacuum in the market. Thanks to the economy, there just aren?t as many potential new breakout hits this year. "Innovation has been somewhat lacking,"?Johnson said.

Toys take a long time to go from an inventor?s sketchbook to store shelves. Development, manufacturing and shipping from China ? where most toys are produced ? adds up to an 18- to 24-month lead time. To be in people?s shopping carts now, a toy would have had to be green-lighted as early as late 2010. Back then, the NRF predicted a meager 2.3 percent increase in holiday sales over 2009, so companies shied away from big investments that might not pay off.

What?s more, manufacturers and retailers have to forecast months in advance which toys will be hot for the upcoming holiday season. Even though economic indicators are inching up, they?re unwilling to risk getting it wrong and having to slash prices when the new year rolls around.

?There?s less risk in terms of returns or not utilizing shelf space well? by sticking with proven franchises, Crupnick said.

By 2014, Johnson said new toys will probably be popping up on store shelves as toy companies regain confidence in the market and start investing in the search for the next big hit. But there?s probably still one more holiday season of retro toys ahead of us.

?We?re seeing this trend likely to continue and intensify in the coming year,? Appell said. Parents who hung onto boxes of childhood memorabilia might very well have next year?s most sought-after toy buried at the bottom.

Halle Berry's ex arrested after fight at her house

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Halle Berry's ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry was arrested for investigation of battery Thursday after he and the Oscar-winning actress's current boyfriend got into a fight at her Hollywood Hills home, police said.

Aubry, 37, was booked for investigation of a battery, a misdemeanor, and released on $20,000 bail, according to online jail records. He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 13.

Aubry came to Berry's house Thanksgiving morning and police responded to a report of an assault, said Los Angeles Police Officer Julie Boyer. Aubry was injured in the altercation and was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Emails sent to Berry's publicist, Meredith O'Sullivan, and Aubry's family law attorney, Gary Fishbein, were not immediately returned.

Berry and Aubry have been involved in a custody dispute involving their 4-year-old daughter, Nahla. The proceedings were sealed because the former couple are not married. Both appeared in the case as recently as Nov. 9, but neither side commented on the outcome of the hearing.

Berry has been dating French actor Olivier Martinez, and he said earlier this year that they are engaged.

New drug overcomes resistance in patients with rare sarcoma

Thursday, November 22, 2012

A new targeted drug demonstrated its ability to control metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor, an uncommon and life-threatening form of sarcoma, after the disease had become resistant to all existing therapies, report investigators at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute who led the worldwide clinical trial.

The treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST, even in its advanced metastatic stage, has been dramatically improved with two oral targeted drugs ? imatinib (Gleevec) and sunitinib (Sutent). To date, these have represented the only two FDA-approved treatments with the proven ability to control GIST. However, in more than 85 percent of patients, GIST becomes resistant to these drugs after seven years and the disease worsens with fatal results.

The new study, whose results are being published in the Lancet, demonstrated that the oral drug regorafenib, which inhibits several cancer-promoting kinase enzymes, was able to control GIST for nearly four months longer than placebo in patients for whom Gleevec and Sutent were no longer effective, a result that was highly significant statistically.

"When added to best supportive care, regorafenib significantly improves disease control, as measured by progression-free survival time in patients with GIST after progression which represents failure of all other therapies," said George Demetri, MD, of Dana-Farber, principal investigator of this clinical trial.

Demonstrating the aggressive nature of this resistant disease, the study found that tumors objectively grew in less than a month, on average, in GIST patients who were initially randomized to receive a placebo. The study's "cross-over" design made it possible to treat those patients whose tumors grew, and 85 percent of the patients initially on placebo were able to receive regorafenib, which then controlled the disease in these patients as well.

Because of the study's cross-over design, Demetri said, it was not expected to prove that the patients initially randomized to receive regorafenib survived longer ? the researchers would have had to withhold the drug from the placebo patients to demonstrate that difference. "But there is no question that people are living longer" with regorafenib treatment, he said, based on the results of this trial.

An application to have regorafenib approved for use in resistant GIST is under an accelerated review by the Food and Drug Administration, Demetri said.

GIST is a rare form of sarcoma that develops in the gastrointestinal tract, mainly in the stomach and small intestine. GIST is estimated to affect more than 5,000 people per year in the United States and about 8,000 in Europe.

Regorafenib is a novel rationally designed drug manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals that was FDA-approved in September 2012 to treat metastatic colon cancer after failure of standard chemotherapy. It blocks several cancer-promoting enzymes called kinases, which spur runaway growth in GIST and other cancers.

The phase 3 international trial involved 199 treatment-resistant GIST patients at 57 hospitals in 176 countries. Of the 199 patients, 133 received a regorafenib pill daily for three weeks followed by a one-week break, while 66 received a matching placebo. The patients were monitored for at least one year after the trial began.

As for other targeted therapies, the drug did not often shrink tumors but controlled the disease for an average of 4.8 months before it progressed, while patients in the placebo group experienced less than one month (0.9 month) before the disease worsened. There was a high rate of adverse effects including high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, and redness, swelling, numbness and peeling of skin on the hands and feet. These side effects were managed by reducing or interrupting the regorafenib treatment, the report said.

A companion report in The Lancet said that the drug had a "modest" benefit in patients with metastatic colon cancer. A commentary by David Cunningham, MD, of the Royal Marsden Hospital in England, said, "In the relatively rare GIST, the case for routine use of this drug in patients following failure of existing treatments is strong."

Demetri added "We know that regorafenib can inhibit many of the mutated proteins and abnormal signals that cause this cancer, and the next step will be to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which this new treatment can control GIST after resistance appears to other 'targeted therapy' drugs for this aggressive malignancy."

The clinical trial was supported, in part, by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, as well as the Ludwig Center at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

On the internet, $5,000 can get you a ton of sales in a hurry. You can invest this into paid advertising, and literally see results within a matter of days. This is one reason why paid advertising online is effective, and it?s something that you will want to do to remain competitive in your niche.

Israel desire to attack Iran "childish": Ahmadinejad

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Israel has a "childish" desire to attack Iran and Tehran is capable of defending itself, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday.

"They wish to hurt the Iranian nation. They are waiting for the chance. They known that Iran does not attack anybody and they know that Iran knows how to defend itself," he told a news conference in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

"We don't accept the hegemony of Israel. They wish to attack Iran but it is like a childish desire."

He was speaking after attending a summit of developing nations.

Six world powers agreed on Wednesday to seek renewed talks with Iran as fast as possible, reflecting a heightened sense of urgency to resolve a long rift over Tehran's disputed nuclear activity and avert the threat of war.

Their call coincided with growing evidence of Iran expanding nuclear capacity in an underground bunker virtually impervious to attack and follows the November 6 re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama, which has cleared the way for new contacts.

Senior diplomats from the six countries - the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany - met in Brussels on Wednesday to consider new negotiating tactics despite abiding skepticism that a deal with Tehran can be reached.

Analysts warn that a window of opportunity for a negotiated solution is narrowing because of growing alarm over Tehran's nuclear course in Israel, the Middle East's only nuclear power which has threatened to bomb the atomic sites of its arch-enemy.

But as the field of would-be successors grows to a dozen or more names ? one of whom may be another member of the Jackson family ? party leaders and political analysts say a stampede of candidates could pose risks for the Democratic stronghold. Spread the field of candidates too thin, they say, and it becomes easier for a more conservative candidate ? or anyone else party leaders don't want ? to pull off a win.

The possibility so worried Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush, a close friend of the Jacksons, that within hours of the resignation he had these words for anyone thinking of running: "Cool your jets."

"My fear is that there is going to be so many wannabes blinded by ambition ... that we could find a tea party (candidate winning)," he said during a news conference. "That would be a travesty."

In a resignation letter sent Wednesday to House Speaker John Boehner, the 47-year-old son of a famed civil rights leader cited his ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder and admitted "my share of mistakes." He also confirmed publically for the first time that he is the subject of a federal probe and is cooperating with investigators.

Federal authorities are reportedly investigating Jackson's possible misuse of campaign funds. The House Ethics Committee is investigating his dealings with Blagojevich, who is serving a prison sentence for trying to sell President Barack Obama's former Senate seat.

Jackson has not been charged with wrongdoing. Attempts by The Associated Press to locate him for comment Thursday were unsuccessful, and his family also could not be reached.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, is expected to schedule a primary and general election in the coming days.

Cook County Clerk David Orr said officials want to hold the elections on the same dates as previously scheduled elections for municipal officials, which are set for a Feb. 26 primary and an April 9 general election.

Orr said holding the 2nd Congressional District election those same dates would save money. But a federal judge will have to approve those dates because they do not conform to state law regarding deadlines for petition filing and when the election must be held.

Whenever it happens, the Democratic primary will be the race to win. The district, which stretches from Chicago's south side to several southern suburbs and rural areas, is heavily Democratic. Earlier this month voters there easily re-elected Jackson, who faced lesser-known Republican and independent candidates, despite the allegations swirling and the fact that he barely campaigned due to a leave of absence that began in June.

Longtime Chicago political strategist Thom Serafin said that makes Rush's doom-and-gloom prediction of a split field leading to a tea party victory highly unlikely.

Serafin said that because of the truncated election process, candidates who already are in office, are organized, and have shown they can raise money have the advantage. Those include longtime Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale, whose ward is in the district, and Alderman Will Burns, a former state representative.

"There's little doubt based on the district's history that a Democrat will be elected here," Serafin said. "The big question is who can organize and 'show me' they're the real deal? It's much simpler for someone who has been in the game for some time to put that together."

State Sen. Toi Hutchinson said she is weighing a bid. So is former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who represented another district in Congress for one term before losing re-election in 2010. Halvorson was Jackson's first credible challenger in years when she ran a spirited campaign against him in the March primary.

"It looks like a lot of egos are jockeying for positions right now," Halvorson said. "I'm the only one who had the nerve to run against him. They need someone who is going to step in from day one."

Chicago attorney Sam Adam Jr. also has said he'd be interested. Adam is a recognizable face and name, having represented Blagojevich in his first trial in 2010, when the former governor was convicted on one count and the jury deadlocked on the remaining counts. Adam also was R. Kelly's lawyer when the singer was acquitted on child pornography charges.

Jackson's brother, Jonathan Jackson, and his wife Sandi Jackson ? who currently serves as an alderman representing a part of the district ? also have been mentioned, though neither has commented on a possible run.

Serafin said the Jackson name could draw a strong base of voters to the polls. If roughly 135,000 to 200,000 voters turn out and the field is split between multiple candidates, that base could be enough, he said.

Among the other possibilities are Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and state senator-elect Napoleon Harris, who played in the NFL and owns two pizza franchises. His campaign aide, Curtis Thompson, told The Chicago Sun-Times Harris was taking the holidays to think about it.
