(AP) ? As consumers we want our electronic gadgets to be durable. But as patients, we might want them to dissolve ? inside our bodies.

Scientists reported Thursday that they succeeded in creating tiny medical devices sealed in silk cocoons that did the work they were designed for, then dissolved in the bodies of lab mice. It's an early step in a technology that may hold promise, not only for medicine, but also for disposal of electronic waste.

The new work is "a remarkable achievement" in combining materials to produce a working device, said Christopher Bettinger of Carnegie Mellon University. He works on biodegradable electronics but was not involved in the study.

Doctors already use implants that dispense drugs or provide electrical stimulation, but they don't dissolve. The new work is aimed at making devices that do their jobs as long as needed and then just dissolved, without need for surgical removal or risk of long-term side effects.

In the experiment, the devices ? which look like tiny computer chips ? were designed to generate heat, a potential strategy for fighting infection after surgery by killing germs, said John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an author of the study.

The devices worked in the mice for more than a week, until their silk coatings dissolved enough for bodily fluids to erode key parts of the devices, he said. After three weeks, the tiny gadgets had basically disappeared.

Someday for people, similar devices might be programmed to monitor the body and release drugs accordingly, or produce electric current to accelerate bone healing, Rogers said.

The researchers used the protective cocoon envelope because silk can be processed to stay intact for varying periods of time ? from seconds to weeks and potentially for years, he said. The device's circuitry itself was built from other materials that degrade in the body, such as magnesium and silicon.

The federally funded research was reported online in the journal Science.

Apart from medicine, the technology offers a way to cut down on electronic waste, or E-waste, if portable consumer devices could be made with decomposing components, the researchers wrote.

And there are other potential uses, too Rogers suggested. For example, such devices could be scattered near a chemical spill to monitor things like chemical concentrations without any need to retrieve them later.

Sustainability: A Better Investment Than Stocks ? Climate Denial ...

September 27, 2012

We?ve actually known this for a long time. It?s actually cheaper and more profitable to do the right thing.

Tyler Elm and Jim Harris in?HuffPost:

It is surprising just how big is the ?sustainability? opportunity is.

In just the energy efficiency (EE) field McKinsey & Company estimates that?$2 trillion can be invested in EE by 2020 with an internal rate of return (IRR) of 17 per cent.?To put that into perspective: that rate of return is better than investing in the stock market or in real estate over the long-term ? the two investments we?re always told give the best long-term returns.

The net effect would be equivalent to cutting the need for 64 million barrels of oil a day ? about one and a half times today?s entire U.S. consumption.

In a separate McKinsey study,??Reducing US greenhouse gas emissions: How much at what cost???shows that 40 per cent of the CO2 emissions reduction strategies are highly profitable. Jon Creyts, the US McKinsey partner in charge of the study, notes that if these profits were re-invested in the next least-cost solutions, the U.S. would achieve all of its Kyoto reductions at no cost to society!

It?s important to note that these two studies come from one of the pre-eminent management consulting firms worldwide ? so business leaders should pay attention.

Amory Lovins, the founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, and one of the world?s leading energy efficiency experts, has documented how North American firms could cut their energy use by 70-90 per cent using existing, proven, practical technology ? all in a way that profitable.

Here?s another surprising one: if every roof worldwide was white, it would eliminate $2 trillion of carbon emissions. Black roofs are the industry standard. Because black surfaces retain the sun?s heat, on a hot32?C day a black roof will be 88?C while a white roof will be 43?C ? a staggering 45?C cooler.?And where do engineers put the air handling equipment? Yes, on the roof! So fresh air is being drawn in at 88?C and having to be cooled to a comfortable temperature. On installation there?s no difference in capital cost between a black and a white roof, and on resurfacing there is no cost difference. So imagine being able to save $2 trillion for free!

We could triple the efficiency of Ontario?s electric grid by using combined heat and power (CHP). Conventional power plants, whether coal, gas or nuclear vent two-thirds of the energy as waste heat. By contrast CHP ? also known as co-generation or district heat ? uses this ?waste? heat to heat buildings. This increases the efficiency up to 90 per cent. Denmark generates a staggering 54 per cent of it?s power from co-gen.

More Republican leaders get behind Akin in Missouri race

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - More Republican leaders came to the side of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin on Wednesday, a day after the deadline passed for him to withdraw from the race after controversial comments he made last month about rape.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which had cut off financial support to Akin, said on Wednesday it backs his campaign to defeat incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November 6 election. Former Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum also endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in people's lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Senator Claire McCaskill," Rob Jesmer, NRSC executive director, said in a statement.

"As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead," Jesmer said.

He did not say whether the committee would change its mind about contributing to the Akin campaign.

Many leading Republicans nationally and in Missouri disavowed Akin after his remarks in a TV interview that women have a biological defense against "legitimate rape" that keeps them from getting pregnant. Akin apologized but was urged by prominent Republicans to drop out. The deadline for him to withdraw from the race passed on Tuesday.

The NRSC support came on the heels of word Tuesday from the Senate Conservatives Fund that it may put money into his campaign. The Missouri Republican Party also backed Akin on Tuesday after earlier saying he should consider quitting.

Santorum and U.S. Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a Tea Party leader and major backer of the Senate Conservatives Fund, endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"Todd Akin is a principled conservative who is committed to winning and fighting for freedom in the U.S. Senate," they said in a joint statement. "Todd will work to stop reckless spending, stop the out of control debt, repeal the government takeover of health care, support our military and defend life at every stage."

Meanwhile, the Missouri Democratic Party said it filed a complaint Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission alleging Akin illegally changed his position on congressional earmarks in order to get contributions from the Senate Conservatives Fund. DeMint and the fund oppose earmarks, which Akin has at times defended.

"In an attempt to salvage his campaign, Todd Akin has agreed to change his position on earmarks in an effort to secure the support of a SuperPAC - brazen and shocking behavior that is a clear violation of federal campaign laws and House ethics rules," Mike Sanders, Missouri Democratic Party chairman, said in a news release. "As an elected member of Congress, Todd Akin should hold himself to a higher standard of conduct."

Akin's spokesman, Ryan Hite, did not return a call for comment on Wednesday on the Democrats' allegations. But Akin's campaign website responded on Friday to criticism from McCaskill about his alleged flip-flopping on earmarks.

"For the record Todd's position on earmarks has been clear and consistent and is not in conflict with Senator DeMint's ban on earmarks," the website stated.

Emotion detector enables design of tailor-made election campaigns

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Messages, attires, gestures, themes or melodies that are liked by the public are some of the aspects that guarantee the success of a political party. FIK and TECNALIA are now helping to define such feelings thanks to Sentient, a "feelings detector." This device issues reports on the positive or negative perception of some people to the stimuli of their environment. Thus, FIK and TECNALIA provide campaign managers with the necessary information to determine, adjust or even enhance the elements influencing voters' intentions.

Sentient is comprised by a heart rate monitor that measures the variations of the heartbeat and certain parameters deriving from it. TECNALIA researchers have created a system that, using the readings of a standard device (a commercial health rate monitor available to everyone), allows them to discern the intensity and emotional value of an individual at a given moment, and transmits this information via Bluetooth to a Smartphone that processes this information.

This emotion detector is used in controlled media, and on a group of people selected according to the needs of the political party based on tthe population groups that they wish to target, usually the undecided voters. Sentient transmits a series of parameters that may help in defining how an election campaign should be developed for a specific political party to earn the approval of the voters, by establishing an emotional link with them. This way, TECNALIA and its partner El Bureau de la Comunicacion, a Bilbao-based state-of-the-art advertising agency, can help political parties to design the most appropriate campaign strategies to achieve their goals.

Sentient measures the initial perception of the candidate in the study group -- which may be positive or negative-, the intensity, the effectiveness of the speech -- if they like how things are said or not -, and if the structure and the language are appropriate. They can also develop a comparative assessment of different candidates regarding specific issues, such as the economy, education, immigration, etc. Thus Sentient provides information for campaign managers so that they adapt such parameters for the purpose of achieving a greater impact on voters.

Other uses for Sentient

The original goal of this device is to function as an automatic emotional transmitter. The technology can be used to measure the emotional response to different types of stimuli and therefore.can have numerous applications, such as in the marketing area -- to know the impact of advertisements and television on the viewers -, and the healthcare field -- to transmit the feelings of people who are unable to communicate.

In fact, Sentient has been used in a neuromarketing study that measured the emotional response to a series of TV adverts pursuing one goal: to aid the debate on the convenience to focus publicity about social issues on positive or negative messages.

Banks want insurance extended | Bankrate.com

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., or FDIC, currently provides expanded deposit insurance for noninterest-bearing transaction accounts, which small businesses, municipalities, hospitals and other entities use to meet payroll and operational expenses.

That expanded insurance, known as the Transaction Account Guarantee, or TAG, program, was started in October 2008, extended in 2010 and is scheduled to sunset Dec. 31.

But now, state and community banking groups want Congress to continue TAG for another two years and they've made their talking points clear in a recent letter, signed by 8o banking groups and sent to congressional leaders.

The letter argues that failure to extend TAG would disrupt the banking system and hinder all those small business and other organizations that use noninterest-bearing transaction accounts. Approximately $1.4 trillion is deposited in these bank accounts, according to the Independent Community Bankers of America, or ICBA, a banking industry group in Washington, D.C.

According to the letter, the program's original purpose was to give depositors comfort that their money was safe and ensure that banks nationwide had the necessary liquidity to meet the credit needs of their communities. Those needs have not abated.

One of the banking groups' concerns is that if TAG is allowed to expire, insurance for noninterest-bearing transaction accounts will revert to the $250,000 limit for all deposit accounts and amounts over that limit -- some $1.4 trillion -- will become uninsured. Those uninsured amounts could become "hot money" that jumps from bank to bank and acts as a destabilizing factor in the banking system, according to a position paper on the ICBA website.

"The abrupt expiration of insurance coverage for noninterest-bearing transaction accounts carries the risk of sudden dislocation of funds and other unintended consequences for banks, credit availability and the economy," the associations wrote. "Notably, this coverage is not free, nor is it supported by tax dollars. Banks fully pay to have this coverage through their FDIC insurance premiums and cannot pay interest on these accounts."

Libya: Embassy attack had nothing to do with anti-Islam film

Libyan President Mohammed Magarief said the controversial film that mocked Islam's Prophet Muhammad and ignited protests throughout the Muslim world had "nothing to do" with the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, and that he has "no doubt" it was an act of terrorism.

"It's a preplanned act of terrorism directed at American citizens," Magarief told NBC's Ann Curry in an interview that aired Wednesday. "Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September. They chose this date, 11th of September, to carry a certain message."

Magareif said the "high degree of accuracy" in which the attack was executed?with rocket-propelled grenades and mortar shells?is proof that the assault was preplanned, and not carried out by inexperienced protesters. He said he believes "al-Qaida elements" were involved but stopped short of directly accusing the terrorist group of planning it.

Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, was among those killed in the attack, but Magareif said he did not know if Stevens was specifically targeted.

The Libyan leader said more than 40 people have been questioned in connection with the killings, but that it is too early to reveal the details of the ongoing investigation.

[Related: Obama: Libya attack 'wasn't just a mob action']

Magarief's comments came a day after President Barack Obama said the attack was more than mob violence, but stopped short of explicitly labeling the assault as an act of terrorism.

"There's no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn't just a mob action," the president said in an appearance on "The View."

On Tuesday, he denounced the anti-Islam video in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, calling the film "crude and disgusting."

Obama told world leaders that he could not simply ban it and scolded those who denounce anti-Muslim speech but stay quiet when the target is Christianity.

"The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, churches are destroyed or the Holocaust is denied," Obama said, in an apparent reference to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mercury surface resembles rare meteorites

Mercury has a surface unlike any other planet's in the solar system, instead resembling a rare type of meteorite, researchers say.

The finding, based on an analysis of data from NASA's Messenger probe, sheds new light on the formation and history of the mysterious innermost planet, scientists add.

Mercury, the smallest planet in the solar system, is also one of the least understood, having received much less attention from scientific missions than Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. NASA set out to change that when it launched the Messenger probe a little more than eight years ago. Messenger became the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury.

Past research based on Messenger data suggested a vast part of Mercury is covered with hardened lava, enough to bury the state of Texas under 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) of once-molten rock, scientists said. All in all, these mammoth floods of lava cover 6 percent of the planet's surface, an area equal to nearly 60 percent of the continental United States. They created Mercury's smooth northern plains between 3.5 billion to 4 billion years ago. [ Latest Photos of Mercury by Messenger Probe ]

Lava plains are common in the solar system. For instance, young Mars spewed lava all across its surface, and it still has the largest volcano in the solar system: Olympus Mons is about 370 miles (600 km) in diameter, wide enough to cover the entire state of New Mexico, and 16 miles (25 km) high, three times taller than Mount Everest.

Now, 205 measurements of Mercury's surface composition, made by the X-ray spectrometer onboard Messenger, reveal how much Mercury's surface differs from those of other planets in the solar system.

"Being the closest planet to the sun does mean its formation history would be different and more extreme than the other terrestrial planets, with hotter temperatures and exposure to a stronger gravitational field," says lead study author Shoshana Weider, a planetary geologist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

The surface is dominated by minerals high in magnesium and enriched in sulfur, making it similar to partially melted versions of an enstatite chondrite, a rare type of meteorite that formed at high temperatures in low-oxygen conditions in the inner solar system.

"The similarity between the constituents of these meteorites and Mercury's surface leads us to believe that either Mercury formed via the accretion of materials somewhat like the enstatite chondrites, or that both enstatite chondrites and the Mercury precursors were built from common ancestors," Weider said.

The researchers also looked at the areas around the northern volcanic plains. These surrounding locales are more pockmarked by craters, suggesting they are older, with more time spent getting scarred by meteor impacts.

    4. SpaceX launch to space station is Oct. 7

The older terrain possesses higher ratios of magnesium to silicon, sulfur to silicon and calcium to silicon than the northern plains do, but it also has lower ratios of aluminum to silicon. These differences suggest the smooth plains came from magma sources that were chemically different from the source of the material seen in the older regions.

"The chemical differences between the northern plains and the surrounding areas, combined with the fact that the northern plains are younger by about 500 million years, tells us that the volcanic activity which produced the northern plains involved melting of different sections of Mercury's mantle, at cooler temperatures and at a later stage in the planet's history than the activity that would have produced the older surrounding terrains," Weider said.

The scientists will detail their findings in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets.

RI owner of cussing cockatoo appealing noise fine

(AP) ? The owner of a foul-mouthed cockatoo in Rhode Island who was slapped with a $15 fine for violating a noise ordinance is appealing.

The Providence Journal reports (bit.ly/RUIVG4) that Warwick resident Lynne Taylor is appealing to a state court a fine imposed by a municipal judge. The judge said Taylor had broken a local law that prohibits residents from letting their pets habitually howl, bark or make other noise.

Taylor's lawyer says the ordinance is unconstitutional because it gives no parameters for what noise constitutes a violation. He notes the statute says that if someone is annoyed, it's a public nuisance.

A neighbor accused Taylor's bird of parroting vulgar phrases, cursing and loudly speaking expletives. The neighbor lives with Taylor's ex-husband.

Animals are conscious and should be treated as such

Now that scientists have belatedly declared that mammals, birds and many other animals are conscious, it is time for society to act

ARE animals conscious? This question has a long and venerable history. Charles Darwin asked it when pondering the evolution of consciousness. His ideas about evolutionary continuity - that differences between species are differences in degree rather than kind - lead to a firm conclusion that if we have something, "they" (other animals) have it too.

In July of this year, the question was discussed in detail by a group of scientists gathered at the University of Cambridge for the first annual Francis Crick Memorial Conference. Crick, co-discoverer of DNA, spent the latter part of his career studying consciousness and in 1994 published a book about it, The Astonishing Hypothesis: The scientific search for the soul.

The upshot of the meeting was the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, which was publicly proclaimed by three eminent neuroscientists, David Edelman of the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, California, Philip Low of Stanford University and Christof Koch of the California Institute of Technology.

The declaration concludes that "non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors. Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Non-human animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these neurological substrates."

My first take on the declaration was incredulity. Did we really need this statement of the obvious? Many renowned researchers reached the same conclusion years ago.

The declaration also contains some omissions. All but one of the signatories are lab researchers; the declaration would have benefited from perspectives from researchers who have done long-term studies of wild animals, including nonhuman primates, social carnivores, cetaceans, rodents and birds.

I was also disappointed that the declaration did not include fish, because the evidence supporting consciousness in this group of vertebrates is also compelling.

Nevertheless, we should applaud them for doing this. The declaration is not aimed at scientists: as its author, Low, said prior to the declaration: "We came to a consensus that now was perhaps the time to make a statement for the public... It might be obvious to everybody in this room that animals have consciousness; it is not obvious to the rest of the world."

The important question now is: will this declaration make a difference? What are these scientists and others going to do now that they agree that consciousness is widespread in the animal kingdom?

I hope the declaration will be used to protect animals from being treated abusively and inhumanely. All to often, sound scientific knowledge about animal cognition, emotions and consciousness is not recognised in animal welfare laws. We know, for example, that mice, rats and chickens display empathy, but this knowledge has not been factored into the US Federal Animal Welfare Act. Around 25 million of these animals, including fish, are used in invasive research each year. They account for more than 95 per cent of animals used in research in the US. I'm constantly astounded that those who decide on regulations on animal use have ignored these data.

Not all legislation ignores the science. The European Union's Treaty of Lisbon, which came into force on 1 December 2009, recognises that animals are sentient beings and calls on member states to "pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals" in agriculture, fisheries, transport, research and development and space policies.

There are still scientific sceptics about animal consciousness. In his book, Crick wrote "it is sentimental to idealize animals" and that for many animals life in captivity is better, longer and less brutal than life in the wild.

Similar views still prevail in some quarters. In her recent book Why Animals Matter: Animal consciousness, animal welfare, and human well-being, Marian Stamp Dawkins at the University of Oxford claims we still don't really know if other animals are conscious and that we should "remain skeptical and agnostic... Militantly agnostic if necessary."

Dawkins inexplicably ignores the data that those at the meeting used to formulate their declaration, and goes so far as to claim that it is actually harmful to animals to base welfare decisions on their being conscious.

I consider this irresponsible. Those who choose to harm animals can easily use Dawkins's position to justify their actions. Perhaps given the conclusions of the Cambridge gathering, what I call "Dawkins's Dangerous Idea" will finally be shelved. I don't see how anyone who keeps abreast of the literature on animal pain, sentience and consciousness - and has worked closely with any of a wide array of animals - could remain sceptical and agnostic about whether they are conscious.

Let us applaud the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness and work hard to get animals the protection they deserve. And let us hope that the declaration is not simply a grandstanding gesture but rather something with teeth, something that leads to action. We should all take this opportunity to stop the abuse of millions upon millions of conscious animals in the name of science, education, food, clothing and entertainment. We owe it to them to use what we know on their behalf and to factor compassion and empathy into our treatment of them.

If your students are in their teenage years they?ll love Common Studios as well as Islands of risk. The Hulk will be my kids all time favorite and The Mummy is among my favorite trips. The big trips at Common are more thrilling for the teenagers than the Disney Park Voyages and there is adequate for the younger ones as well as parents that it is a great time for all.

Kennedy Space Heart is a great consider and you can stop in at the Atlantic while you are there as well. If you are lucky enough to maintain Orlando if you have a start scheduled you should try to go to the Kennedy Area Center on on that day. It is an wonderful experience to see a start, whether it is a manned or unmanned satellite tv launch.

Sea World is a bit bit distinct experience, not as many trips and very interesting animal exhibits and exhibits. It is a minor less congested than the other parks as well as a little slower pace. A pleasant mid 7 days break in the other recreational areas.

Old City has an previously time sense to it. There?s also some county fair type trips, a drag racing experience and a insane sling picture ride. Mother and father don?t get also aggravated once your kids injure yourself over the county fair rides once you?ve spent big money on the Car park Tickets. Additionally there is a parade involving antique vehicles that drive-thru the thin Old City Streets.

As you can see, there are a lot of various things to experience of the Main Florida Place. These are just a few of my favorite activities.

There is no much better way to experience the Orlando Florida Area than from a very inexpensive Orlando Holiday Home.

'Meteor' sightings made across UK

Experts said the meteors could be space junk, possibly satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the night sky, thought to be meteors or "space junk"

Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east.

The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia.

Experts said the meteors could be satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The lights have also been reported in the Midlands, parts of north-east England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth near Edinburgh, who watched the objects pass through the sky, said it appeared to be something "pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere".

"I've seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful."

Coastguards in the Shetland Islands received what they believe is Scotland's most northerly sighting of the meteor at 23:00 BST.

They were called by a member of the public who had seen a bright white light in the sky over the Stacks of Duncansby in Caithness.

'Yellow and orange ball'

One person who contacted the BBC said it was "kind of a mass of light, gold light. Everything moving in unison".

"It wasn't diverging... I thought it was a plane at first. It was quite low on the horizon and moving much slower than I'd expect to see a shooting star, but it was amazing."

Another said the sight was "like Independence Day" - a reference to the film about an alien invasion of Earth.

Diane Martin from Rainworth in Nottinghamshire said she saw "a bright yellow and orange ball" and considered calling the police before her husband checked the internet and found other people had seen it.

She told the BBC: "We only saw the one. It was quite low as well. It wasn't that far away to be honest. We thought something was actually going to come down in the actual village.

"It was travelling from east to west. It was coming down but it was going across more than it was going down."

Durham Constabulary said they were "inundated" with calls from members of the public across the north-east who were "concerned" as to the sightings of unidentified flying objects lighting up the night sky.

In Wales, sightings were reported between Cardiff and Swansea in the south, Aberystwyth in Ceredigion and Criccieth in Gwynedd.

Howard Parry spotted a "stream of light" while looking out to sea from his caravan in Llanrhystud in Ceredigion at around 23:00 BST.

"I thought first of all it was a plane going down then I thought what the devil is it?

Many of the eyewitness accounts suggest this spectacle was the result of old space hardware falling back to Earth.

Classic meteors - fragments of rock - tend to flash across the sky in an instant.

An incoming satellite on the other hand, can take longer to blaze overhead, giving many more people the chance to notice it.

There is now a wild jungle of redundant hardware in the sky - everything from old rocket stages that continue to loop around the Earth decades after they were launched, to flecks of paint that have lifted off once shiny space vehicles and floated off into the distance.

Gravity demands it all comes back to Earth at some point.

The bigger the returning object, the bigger the light show.

"The best way I can explain it is that it looked like a train with all different carriages on it... it lasted about 25 to 30 seconds.

"I've never seen anything like it - it was really, really bright," he said.

Chris Butler, of Tonypandy in the Rhondda, said he saw "a triangle of orange lights" that "didn't look like a typical meteorite".

'Space debris'

He added: "It looked similar to aeroplane lights but it looked really huge so it obviously wasn't a plane or anything."

Dr Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, told the BBC it was difficult to know the cause of the phenomenon.

"It's hard to say exactly, whether it was a chunk of rock coming in from outer space, burning up in the atmosphere or a bit of space debris, we call it, space junk, which is basically man-made stuff from a spacecraft that's burning up in the atmosphere.

"[The object was] probably 80 miles up or so, high up, moving very fast, actually, 18,000 miles an hour, probably, at least."

Colin Johnston, from Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, said the lights were unlikely to be part of a meteor shower.

"There are actually several small, faint, meteor showers scheduled across September but they're so unspectacular, not many people actually bother looking for them.

"I think that actually this spectacle tonight might not be associated with that."

"I think it's something just by chance has happened to come in tonight, some piece of actual space junk floating around the universe for billions of years has just picked tonight to fall in across our skies, or a satellite that's been up for some years has decided to burn up," he said.

Arctic sea ice in 'uncharted territory,' say researchers

As Arctic sea ice melted to the lowest level ever recorded, researchers said they were unprepared for the speed of this facet of climate change. As Arctic ice melts, scientists worry it will add heat and moisture to the globe's climate system.

By Deborah Zabarenko,?Reuters / September 20, 2012

This image shows the amount of summer sea ice in the Arctic on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at center in white, and the 1979 to 2000 average extent for the day shown with the yellow line. Sea ice in the Arctic shrank to an all-time low on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012.

Arctic sea ice, a key indicator of climate change, melted to its lowest level on record this year before beginning its autumnal freeze, researchers at the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center?said on Wednesday.

The extent of ice?probably hit its low point on Sept. 16, when it covered 1.32 million square miles (3.42 million square km) of the Arctic?Ocean, the smallest amount since satellite records began 33 years ago.

Changing weather conditions could further shrink the extent, the center said. A final analysis is expected next month.

The record was broken on Aug. 26, when the ice?shrank below the record set in 2007. After that, it kept melting for three more weeks, bringing the ice?extent - defined by NSIDC as the area covered by at least 15 percent ice?- to nearly half of the 1979-2000 average.

"We are now in uncharted territory,"?Mark Serreze, the center's director, said in a statement. "While we've long known that as the planet warms up, changes would be seen first and be most pronounced in the Arctic, few of us were prepared for how rapidly the changes would actually occur."

The summer?ice isn't just dwindling. It is also thin, relatively fragile seasonal ice?instead of the hardier multi-year ice?that can better withstand bright sunlight.

"The strong late-season decline is indicative of how thin the ice?cover is," said NSIDC's Walt Meier. "Ice has to be quite thin to continue melting away as the sun goes down and fall approaches."

The Arctic?is a potent weather-maker for the temperate zone, and is sometimes dubbed Earth's air conditioner for its cooling effects. However, as ice?wanes and temperatures rise in the far north, the Arctic?could add more heat and moisture to the climate system.

More extreme weather?

"What happens in the Arctic?doesn't stay in the Arctic," said?Dan Lashof, a climate scientist at the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council. "This has a real impact on Americans where they live and work."

Melting Arctic?ice changes the shape and position of the jetstream, allowing tropical air to penetrate further north and Arctic?air to penetrate further south, Lashof said in a telephone interview, leading to more extreme weather.

"That is a truly staggering rate of melting, far beyond what scientists thought would happen a few years ago,"?Bob Ward?of the?London School of Economics?and Political Science said in a statement. "Policy-makers need to wake up to the scale and pace of the impacts from climate change."

Recent climate models suggest the Arctic?could be free of?ice?before 2050. But the observed rate of melting is faster than what is shown in many of the models, according to NSIDC scientist?Julienne Stroeve.

Both the?Northwest Passage?along?Canada's coast and the Northern Sea?Route along?Russia?were open to traffic this summer, and investors gathered in?Alaska?last month to discuss commercial and transportation opportunities for the Arctic.

The environmental group?Greenpeace International?took issue with that approach.

"Rather than dealing with the root causes of climate change, the current response from our leaders is to watch the?ice?melt and then divide up the spoils," the group's executive director,?Kumi Naidoo?said in a statement.

Motorcycle riders are some of the friendliest and most generous people I know, so it?s little surprise that practically every weekend there?s a charity ride happening somewhere. Recently, a ride to promote prostate cancer awareness ended in Washington, D.C., but this wasn?t your garden variety poker run.

This was the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project Trans-America Relay Ride for Prostate Cancer, known informally as the Prostate Cancer Pony Express, with a route that went through every state in the USA. This growing annual event is a ?Black Tire Affair? of the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project (PCAP) based in Manhattan Beach, California. Founded by Robert Hess, the goal of the PCAP is to make men and their families aware of the prostate cancer risk.

?Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men,? says Hess. ?One in every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The rate is even higher for African American men. Each year 30,000 men die from prostate cancer in the United States alone. There are more new prostate cancer cases each year than cases of breast cancer in women, but people don?t really know about it.?

Hess, himself a 9-year prostate cancer survivor, figured he could do something about that. He started a non-profit organization, the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project. He built an online presence (thePCAP.org) to provide a resource of information and support for individuals and families affected by prostate cancer. Since Hess likes to get around on two wheels (both motorcycles and bicycles), he thought he could build more awareness by connecting with other people who like to ride. One result is the Prostate Cancer Pony Express.

The impetus for this four-times-across-America ride started in 2010, when Hess decided a good way to build greater awareness of prostate cancer was to ride across the country and talk to people he encountered along the way. ?I?m in California but much of my family is in Virginia, so I got on my trusty Harley and headed east,? he says. ?I did a big loop of the USA that took 49 days. I was so encouraged by what I experienced that I decided to invite others to get involved.?

Hess enlisted the help of others who were affected by prostate cancer, either through afflicted family members or by being diagnosed themselves. Danny Jester of Clemmons, NC, who lost his father-in-law to prostate cancer, suggested a national ride and laid out the route that this year?s ride followed. Jester also built support in the Honda ST community, whose riders already had experience with national ?pony express? style rides for charity. Steve Fanestil of Jacksonville, Florida, helped coordinate the kick-off event at Bruce Rossmeyer Harley-Davidson in Daytona Beach on March 17 during Bike Week. Richard Peterson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, an 18-year cancer survivor who rode with Hess for part of the original big loop in 2010, coordinated many of the riders for this year?s event and rode 5,500 miles of the ride himself.

Importantly, this wasn?t just a bunch of guys riding motorcycles. Riders arranged meetings in every state with members of the governor?s staff (in several states with the governors themselves) to discuss prostate cancer awareness. At these meetings, riders submitted a written request for a formal gubernatorial proclamation to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September.

After leaving Daytona Beach, the 2012 Prostate Cancer Pony Express headed west to California, then back east to the Carolinas, back west to the Pacific Northwest, then back east to New England, and finally south to the finish in Washington, D.C. Alaska and Hawaii were included independently since roads from the mainland to Juneau and Honolulu are scarce. As the ride crossed the continent four times, each rider passed along a courier pack to the next rider, pony express style. The pack contained a log book of participants? thoughts and comments, a ?Cancer Sucks? banner signed by participants, another banner signed by governors and other officials, and collected mementos from the various states.

Regular readers of Rider may recall a story about a pony express style charity ride (Rider, February 2010). These two rides involve different organizations supporting different charities, although not surprisingly there was overlap in ridership for both events, your humble scribe being one example. When I learned about the Prostate Cancer Pony Express from a close friend (and prostate cancer survivor), I got involved.

In late August, Larry Jensen of Poughkeepsie, NY, whose dad is a prostate cancer survivor, handed off the pack to me in Massachusetts. Larry had just ridden to statehouses in New York, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. I connected with Robert Fortuna of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Michael Breton of Bellingham, Massachusetts, for meetings with governors? staffs in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

By coincidence, we met the governor of Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee, in person. The Capitol Police provided preferential parking for our bikes under the portico of the Rhode Island Statehouse. My Kawasaki Versys never parked in a spot with more class?or better security! As we finished a meeting with the governor?s chief of staff and a personal tour of the Statehouse, a motorcade of black SUVs pulled up. Our bikes were in the way, but no one ?official? seemed to mind. Next thing I knew, Fortuna had taken the opportunity to say hello to the governor, explain what we were up to and ask for a gubernatorial proclamation to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September. The governor, it should be noted, was quite impressed with Fortuna?s new K1600GT.

The following day, Fortuna rode to Newburgh, New York, to hand off the pack to Jim Mayhew of Oaklyn, New Jersey, who kept the ride going.

On September 9, 2012, the Prostate Cancer Pony Express finished at the White House in Washington, D.C. More than 130 relay riders had compiled a total of 25,000 miles over 171 days, and riders met with governors or their staff in every state to spread awareness of prostate cancer.

?The Prostate Cancer Pony Express is designed to reduce the annual prostate cancer death toll by raising men?s awareness of this epidemic and encouraging men to get screened for the disease,? says Hess. ?What I want is for no guy to get caught with a surprise diagnosis of prostate cancer when it?s already metastasized and there?s not much you can do. Our organization is trying to reach out, especially to younger guys, and make them aware of the risk and to give them a tool through testing and the full range of treatment options.?

In July of this year, the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project released ProstateTracker, a free, anonymous service that allows men to track their annual Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test results. Men who sign up at ProstateTracker.org receive an email reminder when their next PSA test is due and get notified if there is a rising trend in their PSA results, which is a warning signal of potential prostate cancer. As Hess notes, ?Prostate cancer is treatable, but only if it is detected early.?
Thanks to all the riders who participated in the 2012 Prostate Cancer Pony Express and to everyone who has been supporting them on this journey.
