The Seven Forces Disrupting Venture Capital

shift keyFor the past two years, I have read or glanced over what seems like hundreds of blog posts and thousands of tweets from people who either directly claim or indirectly hint at a disruption of traditional venture capital. For some, the factors related to the economy, that limited partners and especially institutional investors were reviewing their investment approaches. For others, it seemed as if there was too much money in the venture asset class, that there was too much money chasing too few real opportunities. There seemed to be a long laundry list of why venture capital was undergoing this shift, but never any thread that could lay out all the factors and synthesize just how each factor contributed to shift. That is, until now..

Sprint Galaxy Nexus unboxing and hands-on

It's been many months in coming, but the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is finally available on Sprint. For all intents and purposes, it's the same Galaxy Nexus we've come to know and love over the past five months or so. Same 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display at 720x1280 resolution. Same 32GB of storage. Same 1GB of memory. And, like the other versions of the Galaxy Nexus, it's running the latest version of Android, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. (For those of you who worry about such things, it's running the latest version, Android 4.0.4, out of the box.) It's also got the same 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with zero shutter lag. Huzzah.

The big seller here, of course, is that the Galaxy Nexus is one of Sprint's first LTE-enabled phones. That's the good news. The bad news is that Sprint hasn't yet turned on its LTE network. So it's 3G-only for now. But once that switch is flipped, we're expecting to see some impressive data speeds. Oh, and because we're talking Sprint here, it's also got Google Wallet built in from the outset. So there's that.

Check out our official unboxing and initial hands-on above.

IRL: gfxCardStatus, Nyko Charge Base 3 for PS3 and the OG iPad

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Different strokes for different folks. While Darren may have long since sworn off tablets as productivity machines, our very own Billy Steele (a designer by trade, don'tcha know) has been using one to workshop projects with clients. For Darren, anyway, productivity means having a laptop with a discrete GPU at the ready -- except for when the GPU drains his battery life, which is where an app called gfxCardStatus comes in. Rounding things out, we've got Jason Hidalgo talking up the different ways he's attempted to charge his needy PS3 controllers. All that and more after the break.

Pizza, After-Parties, And Start-Ups: The TC Mini Meet-Up In NYC Will Rock Your Socks!

skylinenycMay is going to be a busy month here in the city. Along with Disrupt and the continuation of our highly successful Office Hours sessions, we're also hosting an ironically massive "Mini" Meet-Up in NYC on May 8. Startups, investors, and general dreamers will have the opportunity to speak with each other, as well as parts of the TechCrunch editorial staff to network, pitch, and be merry. There will be a lot of beer. Along with over 600 of you fine geek-flavored humans, John Biggs, myself, Chris Velazco, Matt Burns, Eric Eldon, Peter Ha, Josh Zelman and possibly Alexia Tsotsis will all be in attendance.

Wolfram Alpha Can Tell You Where to Eat Now [Search]

Wolfram Alpha is the Swiss Army knife of cool futuristic tech. It does everything: it powers Siri, compares sports statistics of all kinds, and analyzes prescription interactions, all while being a pretty beastly scientific tool. Starting today, you can ask it where the nearest pizza place is. Yes, Wolfram Alpha is entering local search: More »
